Fighting Crime In The QC

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Break-ins … shootings … robberies …
They’re all seeming to be on the rise here in the Queen City … but if the folks around here have their way, that rise is gonna finally stop … and soon reverse!

Now, the Charlotte Observer ran a very good article about the meeting between the City Council and citizens who’ve just had enough of this criminal surge and want something done about it. They had stories from different people who’ve been victimized … stories that could’ve just as easily been any of ours!

But if the Council seemed like they were almost tiptoeing around the issue, it’s because it’s not totally in their hands. It kinda runs like this: The perpetrator — more often than not, a repeat offender — knows he can get through the “system” with little more than a slap-on-the-wrist! And, if he does serve time, it’s minimal. So he (or she) knows that another crime will result in just another “bond-out”.

Y’see, it’s one thing to have sufficient law enforcement to handle all the 911 calls and complaints issued every day … but it’s another to have judges who’ll muster the backbone to give criminals (especially the habitual) the full sentencing they should have, and not bondafterbondafterbond they can post, or suspended sentencing.

If we’re ever to make this city safer, the courts have to send a strong message to criminals (especially the habitual offenders): YOU COMMIT CRIME, YOU WILL GO TO JAIL OR PRISON! PERIOD!

And then have the courage to back up that statement, either with more D.A.’s (I agree with Pete Gilchrist completely on that need!), more law enforcement officers, a new and better chief, … and some determination!

About The CMS Job Fair

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

If there’s one employer who needs more qualified applicants and workers, it’s the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. But, there again, that goes for every system in America! And the fact that the CMS held a job fair Saturday to attract these applicants is excellent … and just amplifies that earlier statement I made.

Y’see, very few people realize what actually goes into being a teacher these days. From the first college classes to the degrees achieved through hard work, to their apprenticeships as assistants and, occasionally, tutors, all the way to working with some of the squirmiest kids, staying with lessons rather than losing their cool, keeping up with school mandates for teachers and, then, local, state and Federal guidelines that sometimes restrict them; then preparing for the next day/week/month of classes — and all on pay that’s often not enough for what they go through, the teacher has one of the most stressful jobs in the nation!

So, whatever the individual schools or the board comes up with as far as “hires”, we’ve gotta give ‘em all credit for their work and their dedication and devotion to their occupation! It’s my hope that the board selects the best for our kids — because our children deserve the best!

RIGHT ON TARGET

Okay … here we are, nearing graduation, wedding and baby season (not necessarily in that order!), and stores are gonna be “calling our name” to get us to buy gifts from them! But the economy is buggin’ our wallets, so we’ve gotta watch our spending …

Now, today, you can shop online with ‘em and not have to worry about long lines and parking spaces. And get this: Now you can even get coupons that’ll help you save even more money when you shop with ‘em that way!!
Y’see, Target.com gives you the same products that you’ll find at their stores here in town — even at the same prices! You’ll find it a lot easier than cruising the aisles and bumpin’ into buggies, too! And by using the money-saving coupons that you’ll find courtesy the link I’m about to give ya, you’ll save even more!
So get ready for a great shopping experience in the comfort of your own home, and save on some fantastic purchases! All ya gotta do is click the link that’ll take you to some wallet-friendly Target coupons, and you’re on your way! Do it now, okay?

Debit 61 (What A Rush!)

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

No, it doesn’t look like me (I dont wear hats) — but it opens up a slew of memories. Y’see, years ago, I was privileged to run an insurance debit, and part of it was in my old hometown of Pineville.

Now, for y’all who don’t know the word “debit” in insuraslang, it meant a bunch of people goin’ out, knockin’ on doors, tryin’ to sell somethin’ to (or collect somethin’ from) ya. Sort of like Jehovah’s Witnesses, but with account books instead of Bibles. And better suits.

It was exhilarating, to say the least: Gettin’ up and to the office (with gas prices less than a week’s paycheck, we could afford to drive back then) early, tallying up the previous day’s work, then checkin’ our route and getting on the road to “knuckle” our first door of the morning. We were told “ring doorbell, wait, knock, wait, ring doorbell, leave card”. Then go in, since the client answered the door after the first ‘bell’ (ahhhh, those rookie days!). Actually, to a man, the clients were all polite. To a woman, they were morepolite!

There’s an incident I remember that, to this day, brings a bit of smile to my face (well, something’ gotta do it besides grits and coffee!): I was flipped to another debit and some old gent took my debit in Pineville. Well, when some of my clients asked where I was, he told ‘em (he said “jokingly” later, before he was fired) that I’d taken their money and gone to play pool with it (Huh? No, I don’t even know how to play it! The only time I tried, I missed the #7 ball and poked the opponent at the next table in the … let’s go on, okay?). Anyway, he had so many people cuss him out and show him the door that they put me back on the debit again!

But I learned a lot from those days (including one award for being the top-seller for awhile [take that, Mr. B.!]). The friendliness of the people, the successful negotiation of busy traffic (remember: these were the days before cell-phones), enjoying the beauty and crispness of a cool fall morning, and the satisfaction of doing a solid, productive day’s work were all invigorating.

Most of all, having the privilege of having some of the best people on the planet as clients helped a lot, too …

Runnin’ Water

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Ahhh, how well I remember that ol’ country preacher tellin’ his congregation, “When I was a kid, we had runnin’ water at our house. When mama needed some water, I’d RUN to the well, draw up a bucket-a water, then RUN back to the house!”
It’s a cute joke, but you’d be surprised at how many people have runnin’ water these days — runnin’ down the sink counter, runnin’ into the floor — and all because their faucets are broken!

Now, even after Daddy switched from Hefner Plumbing Co. to open his own pump-repair business (Hinson Pump Co. in Pineville), many of Mr. Hefner’s customers still called on him to do their plumbing! I’d ride along with him, and learned a lot!
For example, there was the time at the Baskins’, when he was fixin’ the trap under their sink while low-flying Army aircraft were clipping the tops of some high trees (or so said Laverne Grace at the time)! Y’see, there were war games goin’ on not far from Charlotte, and we were startled by ‘em. Still, ya couldn’t stop Clarence and his family; they were too busy watchin’ “rasslin’” on Channel 3 to pay much attention to them or us! And that’s what got me interested in workin’ pro wrestling matches in time …
Another time was when one of his customers was so thankful for Daddy’s work — in fact, maybe had a bit of a crush on him — that she actually (I’m not kiddin’ here!) broke things just so she could call him to come and fix ‘em for her! ‘Course, he was fiercely devoted to Mama, and, together, they couldn’t help laughing over the little lady’s shenanigans!
But, in all, he taught me the right way to treat people, whether they be customers or complete strangers. His work was renowned throughout Charlotte and Pineville; but, more importantly, he showed that common courtesy, combined with humility and confidence, could do more than “know-how” alone!
It’s something that I keep in mind to this day … and am so thankful for …

OH … ABOUT FAUCETS:

Daddy always said, “If you wanna give ‘em the best service outta somethin’, ya gotta give ‘em the best product!” And today, with the higher water pressure and heavy usage on one end and the need for better systems on the other, it’s necessary to have the best and most durable faucets for your sink or lavatory! The seals have to be just right, the hardware and assembly has to be perfect for your sink and lavatory counters, and they need to be dependable over the years!

That’s why, by clicking the link I’m about to give you, you’ll find the best faucets and assemblies in the business! They give you greatmore! Why, they even have faucets for the famous clawfoot tubs (now, these could be hard-to-find elsewhere!).

Now, all you’ve gotta do to give your bathroom or lavatory the pizazz it needs as well as the most dependable fixtures is to go to the one place to find the best faucet for your needs! Believe me, you won’t be disappointed — and, as you see these in action, you’ll wanna tell your friends and neighbors about ‘em! So go ahead and click that link now, okay?

About That UNC-CH Sit-In …

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

example of a sweatshopWho, in their right minds, wouldn’t agree with the sit-in against sweatshops? Y’see, the students holed up outside the chancellor’s office at UNC-Chapel Hill don’t want anything with their logo on it to be made at those low-paying, employee-slaving dumps! They want ‘em made in factories where workers are paid a decent living wage, and are treated with respect!

Look … the UNC systems prides itself on building spirits … not breaking ‘em, like the “straw-bosses” of these profit pits do all too often to their workers. They’ve followed the lead of Appalachian State (but, in that one, students were arrested!) and have petitioned system president Erskine Bowles to put all UNC schools on a program that’ll have the goods made at respectable factories.

It’s a worthwhile cause … and, fortunately, the government seems to be slowly picking up on the human-rights violations in these profit-pits! But, until some kind of positive action is taken, UNC can take the helm and put pressure on these places to either upgrade their treatment of workers or be faced with their client base drying up!

Come to think of it, maybe that’s an even better idea …

ROUTING IT OUT RIGHT

If you’re needing better networking hardware — including the all-important VoIP phone for your computer network (these VoIPs are becoming more and more essential to businesses these days) — chances are you’re shopping around for the type that’ll serve your specific needs. Of course, you know you’re probably gonna have to dig deep in your wallet to pay for the hardware, not to mention taking the time and trouble of comparison shopping, checking on warranties, tech support, etc.
Time-consuming? You bet! But there’s a much better way to get the hardware you need, and save a lot of money in the process: Buy refurbished hardware that come with a great warranty and saves you money; hardware that the company actually stands behind!
Now, there’s one place that’ll provide all that — the highest quality, the best prices, warranties, and more — but even go one better by offering to trade or buy your used hardware! All their equipment is tested, refurbished, authorized, and supported by the company, and they offer a standard 90-day warranty … the exact same warranty they offer on new equipment.
Believe me, it’s worth your time to find out more! And the way you do that is to click on this link, which will take you to the site that offers used cisco — where top-quality, affordable prices and (above all) customer satisfaction are most important to them!
So, check them out now, okay? You and your network will certainly be pleased with what you discover …

Columbine III??

Monday, April 21st, 2008

And the kid was gonna call it “Columbine III” …

As you’ve probably read, a student down in Chesterfield (SC) had plans to attack his high school in the same way as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold did in Columbine, Colorado nine years ago. What tipped authorities off were the ten pounds of ammonium nitrate delivered to his house on Saturday.
An investigation yielded some pretty detailed plans as to how he was going to carry out his “attack” — one that he knew was certain to get him killed in the process. In fact, he’d already recorded a tape to be heard after-the-fact, giving reasons for the attack.

Now, a lot of local folks are talkin’ about it, with words like “anger”, “mental case” — even “the devil” — popping up in conversations. But there’s one point that’s seriously overlooked:

Re-read what I wrote a moment ago: “certain to get him killed in the process.” Have ya ever thought that maybe … just maybe … kids who do these things are suicidal, and should be treated and counseled well beforehand? In this case, they’ve already decided to end it all — but, instead of “wimping out” with a handful of pills or swingin’ at the end of a self-made noose, they decide to “go out swinging” and take as many out with them as possible.
Also, they know that, in an attack like that, they couldn’t “back out” of their suicide; if they didn’t complete it, the police would!

So, y’see, that’s what we’ve gotta work toward if attacks (and plans thereof) are to subside; identify those students who are potentially suicidal. Work with them through competent counseling/mental health systems. Then seriously monitor their behavior over the school year. If there’s a danger, we’ll be more apt to “see it coming” in the future …
NOTE: As I said, it can help them “subside”. Under NO circumstances is this to be construed as “stopping” them all. There are obviously gonna be SOME situations that will differ.

THE BEST WAY TO EASE TENSION IS …

obviously, to walk. Endorphins (the “pleasure” chemicals within the brain) begin to increase, and, after a good workout, you feel a lot more relaxed. Besides that, you also keep yourself in shape, get the muscle tone you need as you lose weight, and derive so many other benefits from it.
That’s why you need a good treadmill to help you obtain and maintain those benefits! Now, there are many on the market today, but, just between us, I’m gonna give you a link to the best selection you’d ever want! Among them are treadmills that’ll generate stats for you, so you can keep track of your workouts and their effects, crosstrainers — even one that has a flat screen TV and excellent sound system to keep you entertained during your workout!
But there’s more: For example, you can get a FREE warranty for one full year, FREE shipping, an excellent payment plan — and prices that are absolutely the best anywhere!
And all you have to do to take advantage of all this is to click the following link and find the treadmill that’s right for you!
So click that link today and begin a more stress-free and physically-fit world tomorrow!

A Solid Investment In The Future

Friday, April 18th, 2008

You’ve probably read it a zillion times by now; we’re heading for a recession. The signs are all around us, and we’re beginning to wonder how far our hard-earned money — including that we’ve placed in savings — is going to take us.

Fortunately, there’s one investment that can keep us solvent and safe during these belt-tightening times. You see, investing in gold coinage has been a way of protecting people from the proverbial “wolves” for ages. Since the value of gold doesn’t depreciate like the standard paper dollar, it retains your purchasing power while other mediums of exchange dwindle.

It only makes common sense to preserve the financial dignity of your family during this economic crunch, right? And, by following the link I’ll be giving you in a minute, you’ll be able to start breathing easier about your financial security! Not only is it home to a great staff of professionals in the field who are committed to serving your investment needs, but it’s also where you’ll find America’s best precious-metals dealer (as it’s been for thirty years!). You can buy your coinage for immediate personal delivery, or you can arrange for it to be safely stored at an independent bank (or depository),=.

Charlotte, we’re one city where citizens pride themselves on staying safe and secure; with this recession, this should be doubly true. And the best way to maintain that financial security is to buy gold coins now! By doing so, you’re keeping your purchasing power (and financial worth) safe, no matter how hard the wolves of recession knock on your door. So click the link today and invest in a safer tomorrow!

Rare and Unseen: The BEATLES

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

INTRODUCING …THE ULTIMATE BEATLES DVD!

If you’re a fan of The Beatles, trust me … you’ve gotta lay your hands on this piece of history!! I just bought my copy (PS it was the last in the bin; the rest had already been sold!) and, folks, it lives up to everything it’s been adverted to be!

Remember when, on my music site, I toldja about the “just-discovered” footage of the Fab Four from Scotland? It’s on here! Wanna see the very first footage of the Beatles performing? It’s on here! Wanna see my cat’s pawprint? It’s on here … (er, on mine, anyway. Fortunately, it’s just on the jacket … which is cleanable …)

You’ll also be hearing John tell ya who actually caused him to leave Liverpool; seeing one of the earliest shots of George as a Beatle (not seen before!); seeing parts of their “home movies” and a lot more hitherto-unseen Beatle footage; hearing from those who were closest to them, professionally, and the best and most fitting background music for any Beatle documentary … instrumental tracks performed by The Fore!
Rarities, excitement, a history lesson you wouldn’t get anywhere else … it’s all here!! So, this Relic definitely gives it an A++!! (I would say “two thumbs up,” but how’m I gonna type this if I do that??) If you’re a real Beatles fan, ya GOTTA get yer hands on this!! Get it at yer local record store or order online NOW!! Don’t let this rare piece of history slip through your fingers (’sides, it could break that way, y’know!!).

NOW … ON TO OTHER THINGS:

Speakin’ of Beatles, in a way: didja know that Britney and Farrah’s med records weren’t the only ones that were pilfered and breached from UCLA Medical Center? George Harrison’s were back in 2001!

It’s been reported that crimes might’ve been the cause of death of both Sonny Bono (of Sonny and Cher – and, later, Senatorial– fame) and the legendary James Brown. Word is (as I reported here) that Sonny might’ve been beaten to death by drug lords who knew he was about to “blow the whistle” on their setup.

Mr. Brown was said to possibly have been poisoned by thieves who wanted to find the “fortune” he allegedly had buried on his South Carolina estate. In fact, his friends are calling for his body to be exhumed and tested by toxicologists!

And Heather Mills has made one of the most outlandish claims (okay, stupid, then!), saying she doused the head of Sir Paul’s attorney just after the divorce proceedings because she wanted to “baptize” her for something the poor, misguided barrister had done wrong!

IN THE FORE-FRONT

Today, the lads are beginning their rehearsal of numbers for their next CD, but the buzz going on around is that their fanbase is growing fast!!
And … is there a recording contract in their future?? From the reports I’ve been gettin’, there’s a certain record group that’s seriously watchin’ the band, and I FOREcast one in the very near future! Hey … it’s inevitable!!

Their work on the Rare & Unseen DVD is bound to bring a lot of new fans into the ForeFront, obviously.
Personally, I’ve never met more sincere, personable and definitely more energetic young men than Spencer, Simon, Luke and Matt! When you get a chance to hear these lads in action, whether by CD, on Hotspot and other radio networks or live, take it!! You’ll be watchin’ or hearin’ rock history-in-the-making!

A NEW UPDATE ON PETE DINTINO

As you know, we’ve been keepin’ up with “Shadow’s” fight against leukemia (one which is, without a doubt, the bravest and most miraculous fight anyone’s ever seen!). Lately, the reports have been a bit sparse, but, just minutes ago, I received word from Pete’s angel-daughter, Lin. He’s gonna need your prayers and good vibes, Rockaholics:

“Hello Everyone, well the MRI and CT scan didn’t show anything of appreciation. His blood clot is unchanged and they couldn’t find a reason for the fever. The fever eventually went down to a borderline 37.9C. Unfortunately he has slipped a little the GVH has spread from a rash to his gut. They will treat that with high doses steroids, this though will negatively effect his muscular myopathy. His shaking is much worse and will continue to get worse before it gets better. He also has become more confused this last week. They aren’t exactly sure why but they are having a meeting to discuss the possibilities, I will of course will be present for this and can hopefully provide you all with an answer. He needs our continued prayer and support because he is certainly not out of the woods. We have to leave this in God’s hands. In addition to his physical battle he is also fighting a mental battle, he has been in the hospital for over two months and is depressed, as anyone would be in his situation. I’m still confident that God hasn’t brought him this far to let him go, he is going to make it, it just isn’t going to be easy, of course nothing he does is ever easy! Hoping that the next update is a good one, Love Lin”

Okay, Charlotte … ya know what I’m gonna say, right?? Then LETS DO IT!! The superdrummer/friend/rocker/inspiration hasn’t fought this far to drop, right?? So send those prayers and thoughts out “special delivery, next-minute-air” — matter of fact, take a second here to stop and send out some special thoughts and prayers for Peter in this tremendous fight. Then come on back, and we’ll wrap it up, okay??

PRETTY AS A PICTURE?

Well, it can be, if you have the right framing as well as portrait! Of course, finding someone to provide that can be a bit of a struggle (unless you like to scour the phone book, tackle the traffic … and pay higher prices)!
But there’s a fantastic place, right at your fingertips, that can provide that for ya … and so much more! Now, I’ll give you the link in a minute; but, first let me tell ya what else you’ll find:
They also have an amazing collection of fine art images, posters and more; you can upload your favorite photo or image and have it beautifully printed on paper or canvas (they’ll even custom-frame it for you!); you’ll find an online frame shop as well as their wide selection of beautiful frames.

How To Prevent CarJacking

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Five carjackings in Charlotte — at gunpoint, no less — and the gendarmes don’t think they’re related?
Lemme tell ya somethin’: Somehow, they are! I mean, it’s too much of a “coincidence”

But it brings to light what we have to do to prevent this from happening to us! Here are just a few pointers:

  • First, remember to always park as close to a store (or whatever your destination is) as possible! Carjackers don’t wanna be seen by the public … so the more people around, the safer you’ll be.
  • Secondly, be sure to park where you’re visible to others around you.
  • Thirdly, never have any packages, money, wallets, ID or whatever in plain sight in your vehicle! Put them in the trunk, even if you’re only gone for a few minutes!
  • Fourthly, keep your cell phone right beside you, ready to call for help if needed. If you don’t have a cell phone, get one! Help is just three digits away: 9-1-1!
  • If you’re going from the store or building back to your car, walk with people you know or are comfortable around! There’s strength in numbers, y’know …
  • Fifthly (and if you’re driving in a congested area), keep the doors locked — and never pick up strangers, no matter how destitute or sad they may look! If they need help with a tire, or are broken down somewhere, use that cellphone of yours to call 911, a wrecker or someone to help them!
  • If someone does break in, point a weapon and demand your vehicle, don’t resist! If you do, it’s possible that you won’t need that vehicle again (you know what I mean …)
  • Lastly (but certainly not least) be sure you know the (1) make and model of your vehicle AND (2) your tag number!! If someone does carjack you, get as full a description of the person as possible (identifying marks or scars, hair/eye color, height, clothing) and in which direction they’ve taken your car.

Now, this won’t stop all thieves (some may stop at nothing) … but it’ll certainly keep you more secure and vigilant while you’re out there on the road!

CONFIGURING MEMORY

Every laptop needs it at some point or another, right? The problem most people have, though, is that they don’t know how to go about getting that memory upgrade they need.
Today, though — thanks to the miracle of this little thing we call the Internet — you can not only find the upgrade you need. but get live or phone support, choose the category and manufacturer you want, and more! Believe me, it saves a lot of time and effort!
You’ll also save a lot by going to the site (I’ll give you the link in a moment) and can also sell your laptop memory as well as buy! So, for the best in upgrade and memory configs, you’ll definitely want to go with the place that offers the best and most reliable laptop memory.
So, just click on that link you just passed, and, before ya know it, your laptop’s gonna be quicker and more efficient than ever before! Try it today!

Trash-Talkin’ The Town

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Hmmm ….
Seems like a few folks have gotten a little miffed over the Relic’s home turf over the past few days! From cat-calls (well, more or less. And apologies to my cats …) about the downtown area to long, intellectual jabber about how this or that’s gonna make the town worse, to …

Awww, come onnnn! Enough is enough! Look … not only are you treadin’ on a subject near to this relatively-ol’ ticker, but you’re also gettin’ a bit nearsighted (if even that!).
Y’see, Pineville’s grown by leaps and boundaries over the past coupla decades alone; yet, it’s one of the few small towns that’s actually kept its hometown touch — and the people who made it that way in the first place. More people are coming down than ever to visit the unique stores in the downtown area, as well as the Carolina Place Mall (which, by all accounts, is about to get a big boost due to the situation at Eastland!).

It all seems a bit funny, though; most (I’d say around 99%) of the complainants aren’t from here, originally; they’ve moved from some other area or city, and have ideas on how to “improve” our town.
Listen … as the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t try fixin’ it!” Sure, there are gonna be businesses that go “belly-up,” but that’s the case in every town or city. But don’t trash the town ’cause it’s happened!

I’ll give ya one nod, though: It would be nice if the light-rail actually made a stop in the town itself (maybe over there on Main, just beyond Dover, where the old depot used to be). It’d save a lot of trouble gettin’ back-and-forth to Big City!

But the bottom line is this: You’ve still got one of the most easy-going, colorful, friendly — and profitable! — places in the United States right here! If you’re a longtime resident, you know how everything runs, and what’s needed; if you’re a transplant from somewhere else, you might be learning a bit about the town. But if you’re just gonna stand back in your own corner and diss it, do us all a favor and just keep your comments to yourself, huh?
I mean, after all, if ya can’t say somethin’ nice or productive, we don’t need your input! So stop trash-talkin’ m’town!!

LOSING WEIGHT ISN’T HARD ANYMORE

So many people are talkin’ about the benefits of a new diet product called hoodia because, unlike many offers on the market that claim to help lose weight, this one’s natural (the Hoodia Gordonii plant) and has a natural, botanical way to help you lose weight!
Now, there’s been a lot of talk (both in broadcast media and print) about the offers made on the web concerning this diet supplement — so many claim to have the right brand of it that it can be confusing.
But there’s one spot on the internet where you can find out for sure. All you have to do is click the link I’m about to give you, and you’ll find a buying guide for the product, some useful advice in purchasing it and an unbiased chart that’ll show you the different brands that are on the market so you can make sure you’re getting real hoodia.
So, if you want the safest, most natural — and genuine — dietary supplement on the market, go ahead and click that link now! You’ll be really glad you did — especially when you see the new “you” it can help provide!

Sinus of the Times, I Guess …

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

MAN, I hate havin’ sinus problems! And to think I just got over an infection a few days ago (or so I thought!)
Actually, it happens almost every time I travel to Kentucky for the wrestling event, then back here a day or so afterward. It happens again whenever I go back up to visit my granddaughter … and again when I return!

But, according to reports from doctors and nurses on both sides of the route, this sucker’s got most people, er, “by the nose” in one way or another! And it’ll hang on for as long as it can, though there are a few things you can do to “ease the pain” a bit:

  • First of all — and no matter how bad it feels — remember that it will pass! Shoot — almost everybody’s either had it before or has it now, and they recover! So get a positive attitude about it!
  • Now, remember: Drink plenty of water! The reason is that there’s only one way for this rascal to leave your system, and that’s through elimination (largely, perspiration or … well, the “bathroom” thing). NO ALCOHOL, though; it not only can stay in ya but also tears down your immune system!
  • If it’s too hard on ya, see your doctor about antibiotics and decongestants (there are some on the market that combine the two). Another word of warning: No matter HOW much you love your mama or Aunt Whosis, NEVER TAKE SOMEONE ELSE’S MEDS! Man, that could really rip ya apart, ’cause their meds may be too strong/not right for you!
  • Of course, get plenty of rest! Don’t turn the air conditioning on too high or cool, ’cause that’ll make yer throat a bit raw at night (don’t give that immune system too much work! :) ). And wear loose night clothing (unless ya sleep in the … ummm, that is, if … awwww, nevermind). Give your body a chance to breathe a little!

Of course, not every plan works for everybody, so it’s best to check with your doc to see what he/she recommends, right?

But just remember: You will get over it! Just stay optimistic!!

SPEAKIN’ OF BEDS

Naturally, you’ll want the most relaxing mattress you can find; this is not the time to be playing ‘princess and the pea’ with your bed, right?? Now, many people are turning to the memory foam mattress because it not only conforms to your posture and position, but also maintains its comfortability!
And if you’re lookin’ for the best of these, and at the best price, I’ll give you a link where you can find ‘em. But, before I do, look what else you’ll get: A twenty-day in-home trial, ten-year warranty (right … I said “year”!), free shipping to your home here in the Charlotte area and a lot more!
And all you have to do to get a really good night’s sleep is to click on the link taking you to the best in platform beds! Believe me, you’ll have the most relaxing slumber you’ve had in years.
I know, ’cause I’ve used one for a few years now, and wouldn’t try anything else! So whatcha waitin’ for? Click on that link now. And get ready for some sweet dreams!

Lloyd Thaxton … So WHAT??

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Lloyd and THE BYRDSAs most of you baby-boomers remember, Channel 9 ran The Lloyd Thaxton Show back in the Sixties. Every rock fan old enough to chew gum would tune in to his show, weekdays at 5 PM.
Over the past few years, Lloyd has become a cherished friend of the Relic, and, though he went on to produce segments for the Today Show (winning Emmys in the process!), Fight Back! with David Horowitz, and co-written a best-selling book, Stuff Happens (and then you fix it!), his heart and soul has still belonged to rock-n-roll! We’ve reminisced many times about the “good old days” of Beatles, Byrds, Brummels and everything in-between-and-after.

And soon you’ll be able to catch his show again! But, this time, it’ll be on the comp DVD, My Name Is Lloyd Thaxton — Soooo WHAT?? (remember? It’s the way he began his show (the audience always responded with that last line!) He sent me a “tease” (she wasn’t my type, but I appreciated the gesture! Actually …) which is (huh? C’mon … it was a joke! A very … small … awww, nevermind) a roughly quarter-hour preview of the DVD.

Listen … if you’re a fan of the man (and, if you were alive, kickin’ and under 21 back-in-the-day, I’ll betcha were!), you’re gonna want the full-strength dose (ie, the full DVD) when it comes out! I’ll keep ya posted, so don’t touch that dial! It’s somethin’ ya don’t wanna miss …

PSSST … WANNA GREAT VACATION SPOT??

Then, trust me … you’ll want to head to one of the most beautiful spots in the Smokies: Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! Now, I’m not recommendin’ it ’cause Dolly talks about it on those TV ads. No, sir! Y’see, this place is mama-recommended!
Each year, when they were both with us (today, they’re both angels), daddy would take mama out to Tennessee for her birthday. They loved the mountains’ beauty and solace, and the friendliness of the homefolks around Pigeon Forge!
Of course, you’ve got DollyWood and so many other attractions (both natural and man-made) there, but, folks, the whole experience is as relaxing as a peanut-butter -and-jelly sandwich with a nice, tall glass of cold milk! You’ll love it! And, if you knew my mama, you know that when she recommended somethin’, it was bound to be good!
Of course, you’re gonna want a cabin to stay in (awww, forget motel rooms! Too impersonal …), and, if you’re like daddy was with mama, you’ll want the best for you and your spouse, “significant other” or family. You’ll want it to be spacious, comfortable and easy on the wallet!
And there’s one place that’ll certainly accommodate you. But … what if I toldja they’d even offer to help ya pay for your gas? Go ahead … read it again so you’ll believe I said that. Yep, they actually want to help ya with the price of your trip!
Sound good?? (Man, ya can’t say anything but, “YEAH!”) Then, all ya gotta do to take advantage of this (and be on your way to a perfect vacation … not far from Charlotte, btw) is to visit the Pigeon Forge cabins. Believe me (and mama) … you’ll be really glad ya did!

Dating for DADS??

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Hmph … kinda wish I’d had a few tips after the boys’ mother left. See, I’d been away from it for awhile, and, first time I tried, I came across more like Barney Fife-meets-Forrest-Gump.

BUT … The Charlotte Observer threw out the challenge and (huh? No, I don’t know who’s in that picture. It just seemed to “fit the theme” here …) brought back a ton of memories. All right … one or two …

It seems like dating’s a lot harder these days for us older dudes (no, I ain’t found one yet, m’self!) I mean, by the time we reach fossil age, most women are already taken, either by husbands, the Lord or the Republicans. And they think we’re only out for one thing:

sympathy. Well, that and someone to wash our socks, I guess …

The best advice that was ever given to me about dating at my age (57) was from my son, Tim, back when he was 13 (their mother’d walked out on us a year before): Don’t go lookin’, Dad … let THEM come to YOU!

So I don’t. And they don’t. “Trouble”, “bills”, “computer foulups”, yes. But women? Naaaah … But at least I’ve still got my cats … and my work … and those little voices in my head to keep me company.

Now if they could only wash my socks …

TOOLING AROUND

Of course, every man digs workin’ with tools of some kind. I mean, whether he’s fixin’ the house, working on the car, or just building something, he’s in hog-heaven.
But, as any guy can tell ya, the quality of the tools .. their durability is more important than anything.
Now, we can drive around, lookin’ for the right ones at the last minute, waste gas, stand in lines and pay high prices for a tool the salesman says will work,
or …
we can go to the one place that has the best in hand and power tools, anchors, nailers and air tools. They offer the most reliable names in the business, wallet-pleasing prices, free tool advice (ya gotta check this out!), and speedy delivery!!
So click on that link up there now, because, with Spring here and the weather gettin’ better, it’s time to get those projects underway!

Dr. King and The Way It Could’ve Been

Friday, April 4th, 2008

It was forty years ago today …
Rev. Martin Luther King — a man who devoted his life to closing racial barriers and opening the doors of equality, justice and peace — was due to be in Charlotte to help Reginald Hawkins in his bid to become the state’s first African-American governor.
But, two days earlier, he had to postpone the trip.
He was heading to Memphis to help striking sanitation workers.

Sadly, we know the rest of the story …

But, in a way, it kinda makes ya wonder what things would’ve been like had Dr. King been able to complete his mission in Charlotte (and surrounding areas). He would’ve felt “at home” in Charlotte — a city that had more racial equality than most Southern cities of its size (although some stores, like the old Atlantic Mills on South Boulevard, still had the “whites-only” water fountains). In due course, chances are he would’ve succeeded, along with Dr. Hawkins, in inspiring African-Americans of voting age to register … possibly swinging the electorate pendulum toward Dr. Hawkins a bit.

As time progressed, he would’ve been active in social and school programs, campaigned more strongly for the specific and needed rights of all minorities and — even at the age of 79 — would’ve been an outspoken opponent of the Iraq War, opting instead to negotiate a more peaceful solution to the terrorist threat. But it’s doubtful that he would’ve ever run for President, although there would’ve been an eventual call for it.

The mind, at this time, can go through endless “what-if” scenarios, but the truth is that we can’t go back and change things. Dr. King was assassina … no, he was murdered, plain and simple. But, though the dreamer’s gone, the dream, itself, lives on … if we only have enough conscience to want it.

The same could be said for another famous peace advocate, who lost his life twelve years and almost eight months later. Like Dr. King, John Lennon was murdered by someone with twisted ideals. No, make that “criminal.”

You see, we can plaster names, causes, reasons or whatever all over these perpetrators, but the assassins were criminals for two reasons:
The first is obvious: Murder is a crime!
The second, though, is that their assault on the efforts of peace and unity that both these men brought to the table is criminal itself!

Today, remember April 4, 1968 and at 6:01 PM (the time of Dr. King’s murder), stop for a second and say a little prayer for peace, okay??

Buses, Children and Accidents

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

After hearing about the dual accidents this morning, maybe you can see where this particular post is heading …

Y’see, the Relic’s touchy when it comes to the safety and welfare of children. Now, I know the rain-slick roads might’ve been a factor, but these accidents are becoming almost too common around the nation!
We’ve all seen people run the “STOP!” sign that school-buses put out when they let a child off. We’ve seen idiots jawjackin’ on cell phones … and hit a car full of innocent people because they were sucked into a conversation.

Look … when it comes to driving, it doesn’t matter if you’re the president of Bank of America, a dishwasher — or a bus driver: When you’re on the roads, safety has to be the most important thing on your mind!! And, when anyone has kids with them or in an area where children are bound to flock, you’ve gotta be especially careful! Reduce your speed, keep your “eyes peeled,” and stay off the phone!

When I first went up to Ashland, Kentucky for some wrestling shows a few years back, the sidewalks of their main drag (Winchester Avenue) was thriving with shoppers. It seemed like a happy afternoon. Though, a few days before, there’d been a tragic accident involving a school bus that cost a number of students’ lives (it wasn’t just the “crash” … the bus caught fire, trapping the kids!), it was nearly forgotten about as life in small-town America went on.
I said, “nearly” forgotten about. Until …
A flat-bed wrecker slowly began to pull through town — carrying what was left of that bus.
Suddenly, the hustling-and-bustling street fell totally silent. The shoppers looked at the bus, some with tears in their eyes. Others just bowed their heads in memory and reflection — perhaps in prayer. It was an eerie sight …

But, whether in Ashland, Kentucky or Charlotte, North Carolina, that incident could happen again, if we’re not careful!
Now, fortunately, the accidents that happened on Arrowood Road and (the other) Lansing Drive were minor. No children were hurt seriously.

But suppose it had been worse. It can happen if we’re too busy/fast/preoccupied or (worse) uncaring to drive safely. So show some heart when it you confront a bus that’s stopped for the kids. Don’t let what happened on that fateful day in Kentucky happen here!
