Freedom Park Tonight! (and more)

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

To kick off tonight’s Festival In The Park, you’re gonna see what’s undoubtedly gonna a fantastic show of youth talent!  And, honestly, you oughtta be there if you’re not hung up at work.  Here’s why:

Y’see, the Crown Town’s future lies in the hands and hearts of our children.  Now, we’ve read reports of abuse, misuse and neglect concerning the kids — but, remember:  They’re gonna lead this town — possibly this nation — someday!!  And every ounce of support we can give them now — every bit of encouragement and respect we can muster — is gonna pay off with big dividends in the future for us!

So they’re gonna show their talent in many fields: according to the Observer promo, it’ll include music, dance, juggling, comedy, drama, martial artists, puppetry, gymnastics, storytelling and more.
Hey … can you imagine us knocking of Winston-Salem as the arts capital of the state??  If these kids are half as good as I’ve been told (by parents, their kinfolk and friends), our future’s gonna be in some beautiful hands over the next decades!

But I mentioned what they’re gonna eventually become.  That being said, here’s a vid (from the old American Bandstand) of The Knickerbockers doin’ a very special tune from the Sixties.  Listen to the lyrics … and think of the children at the same time. The words were true then, and it’s true today — just with a different … Coming Generation:

Now … make a point to get to the Park and enjoy the Festival.  The children are gonna put on a great talent show … and you’ll be amazed at the artistic future we’re looking at here in the Queen City!

Worricanes (or a Stiff Wind??)

Monday, September 8th, 2008

What’d I tell ya??
Remember a few posts back, when I talked about bein’ ready for hurricanes (what a lady in South Boulevard’s Radio Shack said should be re-named Worri-canes, ’cause though we’re in-land the news can still worry the socks off ya!)??

Well, it looks like the Gulf and East Coasts are gettin’ plastered by ‘em this season — and more’s on the way! Fortunately, none have done nearly the damage of a Katrina or Rita — but that doesn’t mean they won’t!
And, though Crown Town is blessed by being where it is, we all know we can still get a feel of the fury (remember Hugo almost two decades ago?).

So it makes sense to go ahead and get non-perishable supplies, blankets, batteries, etc., now, just in case one of these blowhards does happen to gain enough oomph! to graze us! And don’t forget that, should “the call” come in over the TV or radio news, you’ll wanna get your tank filled up; sometimes, when the power goes out, the convenience stores are stuck with inoperational gas pumps!

The big question, natch, is will another big one hit us?? It’s not likely right now … but, since ya never can be totally sure, it’s best to be ready, just in case!

Besides, what’s the store gonna do with all that Spam sittin’ on their shelves, anyway? I mean, we don’t buy it normally

SOMETHING TO DIE(T) FOR

Y’know, there are a lot of diet programs and regimens on the market these days (and for good cause, since so many Americans are overweight now. Don’t believe me? Google™ the topic, then!). Some work, some don’t — and folks don’t have a lot of time to go by trial-and-error with these.
Besides, finding the right diet supplement can be time-consuming, anyhow; you have to drive from store-to-store, check out a zillion choices with (maybe) the help of an overworked clerk, stand in long lines to pay for the sometimes-overpriced item.
But there is an easier way!
First, just click on the link I’m about to give you. Then, check out their reviews of the top dietary supplements. Find the one that’ll suit you (you’ll also be able to find out more about individual fat-burners and other supplements on the left side of the page, as well as customer feedback at the bottom of it!).

Once you’re satisfied, just follow the link they provide for the best internet price –and, believe me, you will save money!
So, to help you make the best choice of diet pills, just click the link you just passed! Before ya know it, the diet supplement you want will be in your hands … and you’ll be on your way to a slimmer and fitter YOU!

The Big Denver “Pet Rescue”

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

By now, I guess you’ve read about the little bold lady who lived in Denver (our Denver, I mean …) who had so many childre … er, pets … she didn’t know what to do.
Look — on the surface, there’s nothing wrong with rescuin’ little barks and fleaflickers; it’s what they call a “noble gesture”.
But remember: If you’re gonna take in any pet, you’ve gotta be responsible for its/their care and upkeep! Never … never have more pets than you can safely love and care for!

But 400??? Awww, man … gimme a break here! There’s a lady I know in Parkersburg, W. Va. who had 1,000 taken from her last month — ONE …THOUSAND!! (Don’t believe me? Here … read for yourself!)
And, on top of that, she’s a breeder … and, I must say, one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever had the chance to speak with.
Now, whether it’s Denver, N.C. or Parkersburg, W. Va., the cases in both cities teach us some valuable lessons:

  • Though it’s a wonderful gesture to save an animal, we have to remember that their rescue carries with it a lot of responsibility for the pet’s well-being.
  • If you have too many animals to care for (and be honest about that!), then turn ‘em over to an animal rescue organization that’ll put ‘em up for adoption.
  • This, in no way, is a reflection of the owner’s character or persona. That person can be as sweet and well-meaning as possible … but just has a heart too big to say “no”. He or she should be supported by family and friends, who also should help the owner to keep things under control!

HURRICANE CARLOS TO HIT TOWN! Actually, it’s Carlos Mencia, the fab stand-up and improv comic who’s coming to Ovens Auditorium this Friday (8 PM) with his At Close Range gig.
Now, if the man can keep the bleeped stuff under wraps, he’s gonna put on a show that’ll knock your socks off (so wear extra, or have ‘em in yer pocket!). I’ve seen him a coupla times already while I’ve been on the road, and he’s hilarious! This is definitely a show worth takin’ in — just be sure to get there early so you can get good seats!

LIGHTING IT UP

No, this isn’t about smoking … unless you wanna include “smoking hot” deals on lighting fixtures (see??). We’re all lookin’ for brighter, attractive new lamps, chandeliers, and bathroom lighting (in fact, didja know that psychologists say good lighting actually improves your mood?). And, of course, when we go shopping for those, we know there’s gonna be a price to pay, whether in time spent in traffic, in checkout lines or whatever, or in the high mark-up that so many places have.
But, at the link I’m about to give you, you’ll find a spot that’ll not only provide a wide selection of the most gorgeous lamps, sconces, bathroom lighting and more — but at prices that’ll make your wallet breathe a lot easier!!
And, get this: They give you free shipping on orders over $75 annnd (if you’re wondering how good this place is to shop with) you can even view their security certificate online! How many places will do that for ya?
So go ahead and click on the link that’ll get you the best lighting you’ll ever want! Believe me, you’ll see things a lot clearer … and feel a whole lot better … when you visit and get your lighting needs from these folks!

Answering Your Questions …

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

For awhile now, I’ve been gettin’ e-mails from around the nation and California about our little neck-of-the-woods — as well as about this site and its writer.
And now’s the time to answer ‘em — and I’ll do it in three special posts two that’ll be included next month along with the regular ones, and one that we’re gonna do right now!
Now, I’m gonna do this in the same way I did with THE FORE INTERVIEW: The questions are gonna be written here just as I received ‘em. They’ll be in the italic print, with my answers in bold:

“Why would anyone want to move to Charlotte anyway? It’s like every other big city.”

Man, you’ve gotta be kidding! Why would people wanna move here? Well, let’s see: better living conditions, more available opportunity (notice I didn’t say “jobs”. There’s a BIG difference!), friendlier hometown people, and the best education a kid could possibly get!
And “like every other big city”?? Lemme tell ya a little secret: We were the FIRST to proclaim independence from Britain back on May 20, 1775 — almost a full year before the Declaration of Independence was signed!
“… like every other big city”?? Read the next question …

“What’s in Charlotte that other cities don’t have?”

Hmmm … have ya ever had Lance crackers (you know … those little six-cracker cellophane packs)? Or shopped at Family Dollar? Or do ya bank with Bank of America? Sure, other cities have those, but we’ve got the headquarters of ‘em all!
Or how about some of the best pet care in the nation? One of the largest number of churches per capita? And Pineville’s known as one of the antique capitals of the nation!

“I have a friend who’s been to Charlotte. He says it’s to (sic) rushied (sic — I assume he means “rushed”). How can u live in a place like that?”

First, I’ve chatted with you before, on one of my other blogs, so I know you’re from a small town in Missouri. You’re not used to a fast-paced, progressive citizenry. That’s not knocking your neck-of-the-woods (I personally enjoy the “laid-back” style), but, y’see, Charlotteans are busy going somewhere with their progress! And they’re determined to get to where they’re going!
We have our peaceful, laid-back times, too (just check out Freedom Park, the neighborhoods around The Plaza, Matthews and Pineville for proof).

Now, I’ve got more of these questions comin’ up in September, so stay tuned …

COFFEE TALK IS BACK!!!

Yep … the column that I wrote for The Pineville Pioneer, Pineville Pilot, SouthEast Charlotte News and read weekly in three other area newspapers from 1986-’93 is back … and on the web with new editions every day of the week!
The only differences are that (1) it’s no longer “hard-copy” and (2) it now takes on a national scope!
BTW, the first major ish gives a nod to Pineville, where it all began. Now, you can find (and bookmark) it at Coffeetalk.today.com, and you’re all invited!
Matter of fact, why not leave yer comments and ideas on it? What I wanna do is use your thoughts and concerns as topics as we go along. (And, yes, for this, I’m pullin’ out my old Eagle get-up!!)
So, as I usedta say in the intro of the old column, “C’mon in … the doors always open!”

Heads-Up About A Scam (read THIS!)

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Okay … so I was (nearly) scammed yesterday (hey … I am HUMAN, y’know …). Here’s what happened (and, listen … keep yer eyes peeled, okay? It could happen to you!):

As most of you know, I’ve got a popular identity as The Rock Relic — thus, I subscribe to different legit oldies-rock music groups on the web. Well, a “member” of one of these groups (turns out, he wasn’t part of it at all!) emailed and invited me to join some new “group” called Grouply. Heard of it yet? Well, if yer in the entertainment biz, you might yet

Anyway, the dude who invited me (some freak named Bob Steed … aka Bob Postie) asked for my Yahoo! address and password (yeah? I was dumb enough … I’ll admit that. But, then again, how well does your judgment work after a straight-48?).

No other word from the guy or the “group”; normally, legit ones send welcome emails, tutorial or user/password reminders). From this goon, not a word

BUT

I did get a zillion (okay … one-hundred-ten, then) emails on some of the worst topics imaginable (no, I deleted all of ‘em!).

Worse than that, though, was realizing what I’d done and that this creep could be sendin’ emails out from my inbox (remember, he had the password!).

So I checked my “sent” folder. Nothing. But there was one little ditty in my draft section … and, man, it coulda gone off like a bomb if the perp had sent it!

Now, I know a lot of folks around the QC who’s involved in music in every capacity — a few news reporters, and some TV people. If any are reading this, remember:

GROUPLY IS A FRAUD!! TREAT IT (and any emails from a “Bob Postie”) AS SUCH!!

I know this is a short one, and has no other news in it, but THIS is something that’s gotta be spread … (oh, yeah … I changed my passwords to all my sites after gettin’ the 411 from my musical mates in the UK and California)

Remember the last words of Emo Phillips in concert? Ahhh, well … live and learn!”

So just consider this a “heads-up” from someone who does and has …

Isaac Hayes 1942-2008 R.I.P.

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Isaac Hayes 1942-2008Shaft …

Whenever anyone hears that single word, they don’t think of Richard Roundtree; often, they don’t even think of the movie plot. They only think of one man … Isaac Hayes. He became the standard of Soul around the world — and especially here in Charlotte (anyone who worked on or around The Square at that time could tell ya that!) — when that song hit the airwaves!

Sadly, Hayes left this world — one that he buttered hot with soul — Sunday afternoon during a workout on his treadmill. Upon hearing of his death, the music world seemed to stop for a moment … partly in shock, partly in tribute to this giant who proved that anyone — anyone — can make it in this world, no matter their circumstances.

Y’see, Isaac was born in a tin shack in Covington, Tennessee, the son of sharecroppers. He was raised by his grandparents, where he learned the value of hard work — and reaped the benefits in the love that was shared in the household. When he was about nine years old, he entered a talent contest, doing a song from one of his idols (the late Nat “King” Cole). Though this cemented his interest in singing, in later years he dropped out of high school — finally earning his diploma at the age of 21, thanks to the urging of his former teachers.

Now, you can read a lot more about him by scouring the web than I can write here (you’ll find a most excellent one by clicking this link). But the main reason I brought up those first few facts is to remind you that no circumstances are bigger than your determination to better them!

Among all the lessons that the Black Moses, Isaac Hayes, has left us, there can be none stronger than that!

Brother, you’re gonna be missed … but your legacy will live on … and on … and on …

THE FORE: ACOUSTIC

There\'ve GOTTA be working phones SOMEWHERE!!As many of you know, I’m also a stateside promoter for the popular UK band, THE FORE . Well, Matt, Si, Luker and Spencer just finished an amazing “acoustic” gig on the High Street in Kent, England Sunday afternoon, and the crowd loved it! Oh, yeah … it looks like their new album’s gonna be called, RUN and HIDE! The title comes from a new track that got raves when they played it at Lennon’s Bar in Liverpool awhile back.

These guys are definitely on their way UP to superstardom! Keep an eye out on this site for further developments …

TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD A BIT

Gotta throw in some songs you can download:

First, a rarity by The Monkees called Calico Girlfriend Samba.

Next, you’ve got a Beatles number, recorded by a fan in the audience at one of their final shows. (btw, this is the famous incident where someone threw a cherry bomb onstage because he didn’t like John’s quote about the Beatles and Jesus (remember WTYC’s stupid ‘Beatle Bonfires’?). You’ll hear the bomb go off about a minute or so into the song (the Fab Four kept on playing, though).
So here’s If I Needed Someone.

Up next, a song that every high school rock band learned to play (I know The Ho-Dads did it at South Meck’s gym dances!): Sunshine Games by the Music Explosion.

FINDING THE PRINCE OF PRINTERS

You know, if your work (business or school) depends on the computer, you’ve gotta have a good printer to give you quality, hard-copy material!
Now, finding the right one for your PC can be a hassle if you’re not careful: You can go through the phone book, find one that might sell your brand, drive alllll the way over in this heat, deal with salesmen who know how to add unneeded “accessories” (especially if they get a commission from them!), then go through long lines and pay beau coup money … and hope it works when ya get home …
OR …
You can simply click on the link you’re about to see, and find just the right one, at the right price, and save money in the process! But there’s a lot more: You can also find scanners, fax machines and even greater deals when you buy from these folks! Oh … and how does free shipping sound?? You can find that on selected models, too!
And you can purchase these at low prices and on an extremely secure server! Now … all you have to do is click on this link, which will take you to the best printers in the business!
Go ahead and do it now! Why wait for your “prints” to come??

Trader Joe’s for UPTOWN??

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Well, I toldja this would happen …

Trader Joe’s, the superstore of discount retail markets, is gonna be opening this Fall over at the new Metropolitan retail center (where the old Outlet Square usedta be). A number of clicks back, I toldja this store was gonna really plant its roots in the Queen City, and for it to come thisclose to Uptown will be a big boost for the economy.

Now, I said Fall ’cause there’s a little bit of concern about whether it’ll really meet its October deadline (after all, it’s just two months away!). Still, it’s gonna be big, with over 13,000 square feet! The manager of our first “Joe’s” will also manage this one, btw!

A QUICK REMINDER

For you who’ve looked for my alter-ego, The Rock Relic, you can now find him at his new blog! While you’re there, leave a shout-out, okay?

The Lancaster Courthouse

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Courthouse destroyed by arsonIt’s a sad day for the town of Lancaster …

A 5:00 AM fire destroyed the stately building, which was 180 years old (designed by Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument!) and still being used for court cases. Police and investigators now say that the perps who set the blaze did so on the second floor, then escaped through a back exit downstairs.

Everybody who’s ever visited this quaint town, just over the NC border and south of Pineville (but why’m I tellin’ you that?? You’ve been there, right??) has been in awe of the courthouse’s spendor and history. In 1973, the couthouse was designated a National Landmark — in part, due to its present history, and partly due to the building that was there just before this one was built in 1828 (the old one? It held the last of the witchcraft trials in the US in 1813!).

It took eight fire departments to fight the blaze, and, fortunately, no one was injured. The destruction of this monument to integrity also is a slap in the face of one of the most peaceful towns in the South — one that was rightfully proud of the courthouse and its history!
As we all were …

New Police Chief to “Shake Things Up?”

Friday, August 1st, 2008

So the new COP (Chief of Police), Rodney Monroe, says he’s gonna make changes that’ll beef up crime-fighting in every Queen City community, huh??

Hey … I’m all for it! Some of the ideas he has, like cracking down on gangs, improving their patrols, smaller focus areas — and especially having more units in neighborhoods — oughtta be a boost to our area!
In a way, it sorta takes ya back to the old days, when things … wellll, they were a little safer.

Look … during my ‘rasslin’ days (as announcer, remember?), I did a lotta footwork in the Ashland/Huntington area of Ky/WV, and I/noticed a/lot (Sorry … heh-heh! … couldn’t resist …) that many of the crimes happenin’ were actually from out-of-state perps. They fed mainly on neighborhoods, created or joined gangs, etc.
The police? They were busy … er, doin’ something, but that didn’t include patrolling neighborhoods or havin’ a decent gangbusting unit or two (or three …)

The Charlotte area’s residents deserve what Chief Monroe is proposing. If he’s successful (and, look — it’s gotta be a combined effort; we’ve gotta work with ‘em on this!), then the Queen City could end up a role model for other law-enforcement agencies across-the-board! Or across America, for that matter …

Let’s get behind the man on this and support the issue. ‘Nuff said!

THE LITTLE BLACK BOX

Have you ever gone into a college, high school — or even the mall — and seen a big plasma or LCD screen with repetitive, informative messages or displays on it? Then you can thank the world of digital signage for that!
It’s one of the best advertising and promotion tools available to businesses, but it’s also a godsend to students who want to know the latest updates on classes, fees — even emergency procedures!
This is one tool that I’d recommend to any place of business (or institution of learning)!
Now, to find out more about how your school or business can benefit from the little “black boxes”, just click on the link I’m about to give you. Once there, you’ll find it’s not only easy to get started, but you’ll have all the support you need! They’ll explain what it is, why you should have it, and then, after all is said and done, present it to you at a very affordable cost!
Imagine, though; you’ve made a sale, helped a student, drawn more prospects your way — and any of these could be far more effective than just trying to email or hard-copy your info to them!
So, for the best in digital signage equipment, just click on the link you just passed …
and have a successful and profitable year!

F*I*N*A*L*L*Y!!!!

Monday, July 14th, 2008

FINALLY … we’re back “on the air” (man, that’s the last time I write about a thunderstorm! Geez …)!!

Anyway … got a LOTTA catchin’ up to do, so let’s get to it, okay??

Didja read where, instead of renovatin’ Pineville Elementary (where this writer, his kids, his siblings … heck, everybody but his dog … went [when we old folks went, it was the old, three-story Farm Life school building]), they’re now talking about just building a new one?? They’re usin’ McClintock Elementary as a prototype, more or less.

Now, here’s what I don’t get: According to Mike Raible (planning director with CMS), it’d cost about $16 million to build a new school.
But to renovate? It only would take $13.3 million for Pineville School! Of course, that’s just last year’s figures. Gee, gang … what’s gone up over the past 12 months (hint: PRICES!!)

Seems to me that if they wanna save a cool $3.3 mil, just spruce up the school! It not only saves time (very precious in a child’s education), and money — but just plainly makes sense.

Of course, that’s just my opinion. What’s yours?

THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE

Y’know, with the popularity of today’s home theaters and large TV areas, it just doesn’t seem right to just sit in a stiff, average chair to watch your favorite movie anymore!
I mean, if you’re gonna put in one of those personal entertainment meccas, you oughtta really make it comfortable … and as much like your own theater as possible!
Now, if you click on the link I’m about to give you, you’ll find that it’s affordable, and you’ll have a selection of seating and other add-ons that’ll make kickin’ back and enjoying your favorite movie or TV show more than just something to relax with … it’ll become an event!
To find out more about the best in theater seating and more, just click on that link you just passed … you’ll find just what you need there, and at the best prices anywhere!

Okay … like I said, we gotta do a load of catch-up here (hmmm … come to think of it, I like that on my hot dogs as well); but we’re also gonna include some welcome changes as well. So stay tuned …

Lightning Strikes …

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Well, I guess everybody’s read about the big lightning strike that scared the bejabbers outta those eight firefighters near Lenoir. Fortunately, the worst that happened is that some had burns on their feet and pain in their legs — but it could’ve been a lot worse. With that in mind, we’ve gotta sit down a minute and discuss something:

Y’know, there’ve been a lot of storms hittin’ the Eastern Seaboard lately … and it’s amazing how many folks don’t really know what to do when they’re caught outside in a strong T-storm (and no place to go). Soooo, here are just a few pointers:

  • If you see a storm coming up, go on and look for inside shelter then! Don’t wait! And DON’T go under ANY trees to “get out of the rain”!
  • Sometimes, you’ll know when a lightning bolt’s about to strike your way: The static will make your hair (including on your arms!) feel like it’s raising (and it will be, to an extent!). When that happens, IMMEDIATELY ball up tightly on the ground! That means, crouch down, grab your ankles with your arms, and tuck your head down as far as you can! If you’re hit, at least you stand a better chance at surviving it; your body won’t be a “living lightning rod”!
  • Do not, under ANY circumstance but one, use a cell phone when there’s lightning nearby! If you have a friend who’s been hit, then make a call to 911 only. And, for God’s sake, make it a short one!
  • A word to those inside homes: Stay away from windows!! If it gets too rough, go to your bed — it provides excellent insulation!
  • And get a battery-operated radio in the event the power goes out! This is essential if the storm is severe!!
  • Naturally, if you’re indoors, stay off the phone and internet!

Now, this summer looks to have “storms” written all over it, so be sure to remember the five “P’s” here: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance
as well as tragedies …

THE FINEST WINE …

Y’know, a good glass of wine can always help you “wind down” from a hectic day. Not only that, but it’s also a wonderful complement to meals, special occasions and more!
Now … wouldn’t it be nice to have not one, but two bottles of delectable, top-quality California wines shipped right to your door every month? They’re from small-production wineries (which means they take extra care to bring you the best! No fancy, corporate “assembly-line” there!)
And, of course, they’re great for special occasions … weddings, anniversaries, or promotions! You’ll love the prices, too!
Listen … I know your mouth is already watering, so why not go on to the site that’ll introduce you to the best California wine club for you?
It’s easy … convenient … and downright tasteful!

The Rain, The Park and Other Things

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Yup … it’s been rainin’
and you’d be surprised at how many folks aren’t complaining about it. Y’see, after the flooding that’s taken place along the Mississippi, we’re a bit humbled … and thankful … that we’re not takin’ on the heaviest of the water woes.

Still, it’s important to know what to do in the event we do have flooding over here — and it can happen in some places (ask those around Pineville, and especially in the Lakes Wylie and Norman areas!). Though most of us know what to expect and do, here’s an idea that a reader down in Alabama sent me. Betcha hadn’t thought of it, have ya?:

“… an idea that anyone can use is to rent an above-water level storage unit to put all their really important valuables into (sic). That way, they can remain safe and dry in case theres (sic) flooding.”

Sounds good. Just be sure to find one that’s secure (where they won’t be tampered with), and you’re set!

FUN AT THE PARKS

Whether you’re goin’ to Freedom Park, Pineville Park or Carowinds Park, you’re bound to have a good and relaxing time (okay … once it dries out a little!). With a zillion things to do or take in, you can relax and have some good, clean fun this summer.
But, a word to the wise (wait. Why do they say that?? I mean, don’t the “wise” already know things?? Guess it sounds better than “A word to those who don’t know better?” But, there again, would they be reading this if they … awww, nevermind …):
Wherever ya go this summer, PLEASE keep a close eye on your young’uns, okay? Tribute To A Brother

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

THIS IS A SPECIAL REPORT:

The kid on yer left? No, it isn’t Bobby Rydell (though he looked a little like it in this pic).

Actually, it’s my younger brother, Dick, back in 1969. Some of you may remember him as a grad of South Meck, Class of ‘71.
He was also the drummer in my band for awhile, until he gave up the stix to get into photography. As he grew, he became a helluva nice guy, very down-home, and a true “family-man” (yep, he was a bit rowdy way-back-when!).

But, last night, that warm heart was stilled, when my sis called to inform me that he’d just died of a sudden, massive heart attack at the age of 54. Didn’t even make it to the hospital …

Now, there’s a lotta reflectin’ that I could do at this point. But, in the interest of time and space, lemme just share a few smiles about my younger bro, Charles Richard Hinson:

When mama and daddy brought him home from the hospital, two-year-old Chucky (and don’t call me that unless ya love me, k?) took a hankerin’ to his hair, and started lickin’ it regularly. When he died, Dick was the only one of us Hinson boys who wasn’t bald on top! (as an aside, didja know that cow spit can keep ya from goin’ bald? Is there a connection? Nobody around here knows … or wants to know …)

Once, when Steve (my youngest bro) and Jimmy (my cousin and bassist) were in K-Mart® with Daddy, and in a very narrow aisle, Dick … er, “cut some cheese” (no offense, Mousers!) and, since there were people comin’ into the aisle, took off running with Jimmy and Steve in tow! That left Daddy with a terrible scent wafting through the aisle … and some accusing looks from the shoppers!

In 1964, I was on my bed, strummin’ my brand-new nylon-stringed Sears® Silvertone™ guitar (it sounded great, even without the ™ !), when I heard a bloodcurdling yell from my 11-year-old brother: “HEY! COME WATCH THIS!!” After I uncurdled my blood, I ran in to the living room where he had flipped the channel to the first episode of The Lloyd Thaxton Show.
Man, I was riveted. After sobering up(small joke. I was only 14!), I was still enthralled by this crazy man with the groovy music (records and in-the-flesh acts!) and dancing all around him. So What?? I’ve become a lifelong LT fan … and am blessed to know him now as a cherished friend as well!

During our last song at a show in Pineville, NC in late ‘66 (the Astronauts/Monkees’ Steppin’ Stone), Dick started to show his “Keith Moon” side during the last bridge. His excuse: “I got so caught up in it, I didn’t know what I was doin’!” The kid had a great musical future if he’d taken it …

in fact, he built his own stage with about a dozen-plus speakers built-in! Now, remember: this was small-town, quiet-as-a-mouse town Pineville, NC (well, it was back then!)

Yup … only used the stage one time …

He wrote me on occasion while I was in the Army, and, though in later years we rarely saw each other (even drifted apart in our philosophy), he always told me I was the best writer and rocker in “these parts”. Even as late as 1999, when we got together at mama’s funeral, he told me “you know enough to make a LIVIN’ with what you know about rock …”
Bottom line: Whether we were “on the same page” or not over the years, I loved the dude! He was my brother! And my heart goes out to his wife (they’d just celebrated 36 years of wedded bliss), Mel, their daughter Amber, son-in-law Mark, son Scott, daughter-in-law April, and five grandkids who were blessed to call him “PawPaw”!

Now, there’s one more thing I’ve GOTTA stress:

Over the years,Dick became a heavy smoker and didn’t care much for exercising. That, along with our family’s history of heart trouble and high blood pressure, undoubtedly contributed to the untimely passing of this wunderkund of the family.

So … (pass this along to EVERY person ya know):

FROM THE HEART OF THIS OL’ ROCK RELIC:

If your family (going back at least two generations) has had even the SLIGHTEST hint of heart trouble in its history, GET A REGULAR PHYSICAL, stressing the cardio!! It’s VERY important! The Relic has one every six months like clockwork!

and KEEP CLOSE CHECK ON THE BP!! (and I ain’t talking “baked potato” here, yardbirds!) Average is 120/80. Yours may differ, but be SURE to keep it in the “safe zone”!

Keep your CHOLESTEROL level down (at least the “bad” cholesterols!). The Relic is free of those (well, almost), and my regularly-lower-than-average BP is stable!

THESE THINGS CAN ALL BE INHERITED!!

EXERCISE!! It doesn’t only help your cardiovascular system, but the endorphins can work miracles for the moods! I personally pound the pavement for at LEAST ten miles a day, rain or shine, incidentally.

If you smoke, QUIT … or at LEAST cut it down by two-thirds!! Besides, you’ll be controlling “it”, as opposed to “it” controlling you! (Huh?? Only when I’m on fire!)

EVERY reader here — whether you’re from the Queen City or not — is dear to me … you’re fantastic in your own right!! And your lives are valuable … to you and the ones you love.

So keep it ALIVE, okay??

THIS HAS BEEN A SPECIAL REPORT. WE RESUME OUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING ON MONDAY.

The Fab FORE Interview (conclusion)

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Well, this is the last segment of the innerview with Spencer Hannabuss (bass, vocals, songwriter, founding member), Luke Bentley (rhythm, vocals), Simon Thompson (drums, vocals) and Matt Hardy (lead, vocals) — collectively, THE FORE! (no, it’s not a misspelling! You’re reading the “interview” that gives you an “inner view” of the popular lads!)
Now, I’ve had a few e-mails that have asked “What does this have to do with Charlotte?” The answer’s in three parts: (1) Some of the questions were asked by CrownTowners; (2) the lads love NC and its people, and (3) with growing national interest in our SpongeTones comes an interest in the British Invasion and bands that are carryin’ that sound into the 21st Century! Besides, the band definitely wants to play Charlotte when they get over here!
That being said, here we go with Pt. 3 of The Fab FORE Interview!

(Now, one more time, troops: remember … I printed the questions out exactly as you wrote ‘em! No changes; didn’t wanna leave anything out! And, like I said before, Matt couldn’t make it to the “meeting of the minds” for this, but he had the others answer on his behalf).

The lads’ answers are in bold type:

Spencer“My son Chris wants to start a rock band he hopes will be sucessful (sic). Since the fore is so good and sucessful (sic) can you give him some advice on what he will have to do and what he needs to look out for?”

SIMON: A good drummer!! :) I’m sure Spencer will fill in the rest — he’s been there! lol

DAVID (co-manager): Well crafted songs are your biggest asset, along with practice, practice and then more practice! Play everywhere, one minute the Fore are playing with the Bootleg Beatles or at the Cavern and the next they are pushing trolleys full of equipment to play in the High Street! Keep moving forward and never give in. Be positive! Oh … and did I mention practice? :-)

SPENCER: I’ll add to that - The first thing is to enjoy what you’re doing. Full stop. It sounds simple but if you’re playing music in a band that isn’t what you’re looking to do it’ll never work. We all love playing the style of music that we do and that’s so important - in the past we have had musicians in the band who weren’t 100% into the sound. It’s that love for what you do that gets you through the ‘dark’ times - it’s that that gets you by when you’re playing at gig miles from home, waiting 4 hours to play and then it’s only to a handful of people. The good times will come - but it’s often a long, long road (as the Hollies would say!)

“I know you played a big tv show for bbc. Is playing on tv any different than paying (sic) for a live show in front of fans? If so how?””

SPENCER: Very different. This is mainly because at a live show you can interact with the audience. The audience applause tends to ‘book-end’ a song whereas on TV there was … nothing!! We had to make sure we were speaking straight after the last chord was ringing to avoid those uncomfortable silences.
The BBC experience was unlike anything we had been through before. We were filmed constantly for 6 hours and the pressure to always be ‘performing’ was immense. We were pretty much presenting our own show which was something that we’ve never done before. Actually, by the end of the second, I think we had gotten a lot better at it and whilst I don’t know whether I’d like to do that particular show again, I think we’d all like to get more exposure on TV. We had a great time!

SIMON: When you play in front of an audience you feed off their energy, but, when it’s just us 4 and a camera man, we have to learn to feed off each other’s which is totally different. The BBC show we did was playing constant for 6 hours so, by the second day, there wasn’t much energy left.

'Luker'“Have any of u ever met the beatles i mean paul or ringo? u sound so much like them and some even better.”

SIMON: I personally haven’t, though I’ve done the Liverpool tour and visited their original houses.

SPENCER: Well it’s an honour to be even compared to The Beatles, let alone someone saying we sound BETTER than them! Thank you!!!!
I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Paul McCartney in person. A good friend of mine worked as a radio reporter, working specifically on entertainment. He managed to get me an access to all areas pass at one of Paul’s ‘Back In The World’ tour in 2003. I was lucky enough to watch his sound check and then sit in on his interview with my friend. I even gave him a copy of 3 of my songs on CD!! He seemed a genuine kind of guy and I was really pleased to meet him!

“Do you ever get butterflys (sic) before going on stage?”

SPENCER: Not all that often these days, although there’s always a keenness to just get on stage and play. I’m often pacing around before a gig, just ‘cos I get impatient from not getting up there and doing what we do best!

SIMON: I think I did on my first gig but since then being on stage in front of people just feel right it’s where I belong.

“Do any of you have brothers or sisters who play too. I mean not with the fore but play.”

SPENCER: My sister is more arty than musical. Some of her drawings are amazing. My dad used to play semi-professionally years back, in the late 60s, so I guess that’s where I get my musical talent from. His guitar and bass were the first instruments I picked up.

SIMON: I have 2 older sisters but neither of them play — though my nephew has started to play drums now …don’t think his mum ever forgive me for that! lol

“A question for Simon if he doesntmind. I heard your song “Someone New” and LOVE it. How do you get the drum sound like the triple tom in there? Ive tried and tried because Im adrummer too.”

SIMON: During my little solo I’m playing the kick and both toms pretty much at the same time on different beats. But then I do the triple beat on just the floor tom and quickly move back to the original beat. Its difficult to explain but I’ll try and get a close up video of it to show you. (Rockiteers, if he can do it, I promise to put it on the very next post [and send a copy to you, Eric!])

SPENCER: I remember the first time that Si put the triplet in the drum fill. We were rehearsing in Croydon, Surrey (just me and him actually) and we were running over material for Black & White. It’s a great song, particularly live, and Si’s not really given credit for the part he plays in it, or many of our other songs. Good ol’ Si!!

I wanna thank all 4 (and Neil and David) of The Fore for taking a few minutes of their time to answer your questions! I gotta tell ya that, in thirty+ years in the biz of writin’ and rockin’, this is the best band I’ve ever had the pleasure to promote! And this is proof that you won’t find a more “fan-oriented”, harder-workin’ band in the known world than these FORE!!
But, for now, let’s get on to a coupla other thingz, okay?

Interview with the Fab FORE (Pt. II)

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Okay, QC’ers … here’s Part 2 of the interview that’s got fans around the globe buzzin’ — and anxious to hear the rest of the story from Spencer Hannabuss (bass, vocals, songwriter, founding member), Luke Bentley (rhythm, vocals), Simon Thompson (drums, vocals) and Matt Hardy (lead, vocals) — collectively, THE FORE!
(I was told that waitin’ for Pt. 2 is like waiting for the conclusion of a popular old TV series’ two-parter. Well, I might be a batty man, but I ain’t gonna be robbin’ ya of this part –unless some joker at IP Central disconnects me!) So, without further ado, I (oh? I didn’t use gotham? Mebbe ’cause it’s made up of two separate words that can make me very hungry …) give you Pt. 2 of The Fab FORE Interview!

(Now, remember … I printed the questions out exactly as you wrote ‘em! No changes; didn’t wanna leave anything out! And, like I said before, Matt couldn’t make it to the “meeting of the minds” for this, but he had the others answer on his behalf. Oh … and two of these questions came from here in Charlotte!).

The lads’ answers are in bold type:

Spencer“Is that song Man of Few Words really about Simon the drummer? He sounds o much like Buddy Holley its (sic) gives me goose bumps. U should let him sing more sometimes.”
SPENCER: MOFW’s was originally written with Matt in mind (which funnily enough matches up with the last question about him!) but I think Matt saw it as a slight on his personality and wasn’t comfortable with singing it. Simon then joined the band and took to the song like a fish to water (again, can you really imagine anyone singing MOFWs other than Si?).
We do have another song that I’m keen to give to Simon to sing, called It Doesn’t Matter which is very Buddy Holly! I think Simon will do the song proud. Hopefully one day we’ll record it.
SIMON: I wouldn’t class myself as a “man of few words.” If I had a mic all the time you’d probably hear me joking with the guys in-between songs.

“How often does the band rehearse their songs and how do they pick the ones they do in concert?”
SPENCER: Rehearsal time is at a bit of a premium really since we’re so busy on the road all the time. Songs will often be learnt individually and then rehearsed in sound checks before being given a chance in a set.
Funnily enough, we’re talking at the moment about doing more rehearsals so that we can learn the new material for the next (second) album!
The set list for a concert is usually picked by me. I will take into account the audience that we are playing to and the time that we’re playing for. I try to ensure that the set is balanced in terms of who sings and also a varied amount of slow/medium and fast-paced numbers in it.

'Luker'“I’d like to ask Neil and David got to be managers. Do they have anybody to help them like secretarys (sic) or promoters? As good as the band is, they could have managed the Beatles!”
NEIL WHITE (co-manager): No, no one to help us in the UK (could do with a secretary, though!) but Chuck is doing an awesome job across the pond. Dave and I just work it out between us. We don’t mind what we do, from being roadies, publishing the website and Fore-um to booking gigs and talking to promoters. To be honest, we just do as much as time allows with help from the band. It’s all enjoyable and, of course, the aim being to get these guys signed! (not sure we deserve the Beatles compliment though, but thanks! lol)
SPENCER: Both Neil and David have made a huge impact on our lives. Music aside, we all feel that N&D are good, trustworthy friends and I wouldn’t swap them for anyone. I’m sure they’d be the first to admit that a lot of the good work that goes on behind the scenes wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for our satellite helpers across the world whom, without their help, we wouldn’t have the presence outside of our own country.
We will always encourage outside help from anyone and are always happy to talk to people wanting to lend a hand in our push for that record contract!

“When will we see the new CD come out? If its half as good as your other one its going to go platnum (sic).”
SPENCER: Well, who knows? We have just booked up our first session in the studio for 6th September through to 12th September. We may need a second session, which is likely to be in October. I’d like to record around 20 songs and then choose an album of 14-15 songs from that. Maybe the other songs could be release at a later date!
SIMON: It’ll be the ”must-have’ Christmas present!

“What do the band members like to do on their days off from performing?”
SPENCER: You mean … there are days that we aren’t performing?? :) At the moment, time off is very scarce. I’ve just adopted a couple of fluffy cats so they’re taking up quite a bit of time at the moment. Their names are “Womble” and “Muffin.”
SIMON: If I’m not banging my drums onstage, you’ll probably hear me banging my Roland kit at home, or crashing out in front of my big TV in my new apartment watching American TV shows.
LUKE: Well, we all work full-time so we don’t get much time off at all! But if we do, we like to have a beer and chill out.

“What is each band member’s favorite color?”
SPENCER: Always liked Red (I’ve only owned red cars), but black and brown are two of my favorite colours to wear.
LUKE: Blue!! I love the blue!!
SIMON: You’ve probably guessed already (that) it’s black. I like the old style Beatles look so I wear it when I can onstage.

“When will we see them in the US? I hope soon. They are the best thing to hapen (sic) to rock and roll music since the Beatles and we sure need their music over here.”
SPENCER: Well, we want to come over, too. We need to get more exposure over in the states, and, when the time is right and that breakthrough happens, we’ll be over like a shot!
SIMON: Well, I’ll be in North Carolina (though Raleigh) & Virginia in August attending a wedding but that doesn’t count. But I hope soon as well! As soon as we get the call I’ll pack my bags and jet off to all you lovely Carolina Foreheads!

Simon“I like the acting they did on Love For Sale on youtube. The dog was precious. Was he any one of theirs? They could go into movies they are all so good looking.”
SPENCER: “Flea” belongs to Matt’s brother-in-law (who’s also called Matt!). Some might say that the dog out-performed the band … :)
SIMON: Gee shocks, thank you! “Flea” is owned by Matt’s brother-in-law who was the brains behind the video and scripting.”

Hey …GUESS WHAT?? I’m gonna give the lads a break for a few hours, but, since you’ve sent in six more questions, I’m gonna conclude “The fab FORE Interview” in TOMORROW’S ish! If you think you know ‘em now, just wait until ya read what’s comin’ up …

But, for now, I’ve gotta feed the cats (or, those who haven’t already eaten most of my peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich that I had on the desk!), flip off the RockStation for about a circle of minutes (360) and get some sleep! So, until tomorrow’s edition, remember the words of the Relic:

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side!
