Interview with the Fab FORE (Pt. II)

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Okay, QC’ers … here’s Part 2 of the interview that’s got fans around the globe buzzin’ — and anxious to hear the rest of the story from Spencer Hannabuss (bass, vocals, songwriter, founding member), Luke Bentley (rhythm, vocals), Simon Thompson (drums, vocals) and Matt Hardy (lead, vocals) — collectively, THE FORE!
(I was told that waitin’ for Pt. 2 is like waiting for the conclusion of a popular old TV series’ two-parter. Well, I might be a batty man, but I ain’t gonna be robbin’ ya of this part –unless some joker at IP Central disconnects me!) So, without further ado, I (oh? I didn’t use gotham? Mebbe ’cause it’s made up of two separate words that can make me very hungry …) give you Pt. 2 of The Fab FORE Interview!

(Now, remember … I printed the questions out exactly as you wrote ‘em! No changes; didn’t wanna leave anything out! And, like I said before, Matt couldn’t make it to the “meeting of the minds” for this, but he had the others answer on his behalf. Oh … and two of these questions came from here in Charlotte!).

The lads’ answers are in bold type:

Spencer“Is that song Man of Few Words really about Simon the drummer? He sounds o much like Buddy Holley its (sic) gives me goose bumps. U should let him sing more sometimes.”
SPENCER: MOFW’s was originally written with Matt in mind (which funnily enough matches up with the last question about him!) but I think Matt saw it as a slight on his personality and wasn’t comfortable with singing it. Simon then joined the band and took to the song like a fish to water (again, can you really imagine anyone singing MOFWs other than Si?).
We do have another song that I’m keen to give to Simon to sing, called It Doesn’t Matter which is very Buddy Holly! I think Simon will do the song proud. Hopefully one day we’ll record it.
SIMON: I wouldn’t class myself as a “man of few words.” If I had a mic all the time you’d probably hear me joking with the guys in-between songs.

“How often does the band rehearse their songs and how do they pick the ones they do in concert?”
SPENCER: Rehearsal time is at a bit of a premium really since we’re so busy on the road all the time. Songs will often be learnt individually and then rehearsed in sound checks before being given a chance in a set.
Funnily enough, we’re talking at the moment about doing more rehearsals so that we can learn the new material for the next (second) album!
The set list for a concert is usually picked by me. I will take into account the audience that we are playing to and the time that we’re playing for. I try to ensure that the set is balanced in terms of who sings and also a varied amount of slow/medium and fast-paced numbers in it.

'Luker'“I’d like to ask Neil and David got to be managers. Do they have anybody to help them like secretarys (sic) or promoters? As good as the band is, they could have managed the Beatles!”
NEIL WHITE (co-manager): No, no one to help us in the UK (could do with a secretary, though!) but Chuck is doing an awesome job across the pond. Dave and I just work it out between us. We don’t mind what we do, from being roadies, publishing the website and Fore-um to booking gigs and talking to promoters. To be honest, we just do as much as time allows with help from the band. It’s all enjoyable and, of course, the aim being to get these guys signed! (not sure we deserve the Beatles compliment though, but thanks! lol)
SPENCER: Both Neil and David have made a huge impact on our lives. Music aside, we all feel that N&D are good, trustworthy friends and I wouldn’t swap them for anyone. I’m sure they’d be the first to admit that a lot of the good work that goes on behind the scenes wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for our satellite helpers across the world whom, without their help, we wouldn’t have the presence outside of our own country.
We will always encourage outside help from anyone and are always happy to talk to people wanting to lend a hand in our push for that record contract!

“When will we see the new CD come out? If its half as good as your other one its going to go platnum (sic).”
SPENCER: Well, who knows? We have just booked up our first session in the studio for 6th September through to 12th September. We may need a second session, which is likely to be in October. I’d like to record around 20 songs and then choose an album of 14-15 songs from that. Maybe the other songs could be release at a later date!
SIMON: It’ll be the ”must-have’ Christmas present!

“What do the band members like to do on their days off from performing?”
SPENCER: You mean … there are days that we aren’t performing?? :) At the moment, time off is very scarce. I’ve just adopted a couple of fluffy cats so they’re taking up quite a bit of time at the moment. Their names are “Womble” and “Muffin.”
SIMON: If I’m not banging my drums onstage, you’ll probably hear me banging my Roland kit at home, or crashing out in front of my big TV in my new apartment watching American TV shows.
LUKE: Well, we all work full-time so we don’t get much time off at all! But if we do, we like to have a beer and chill out.

“What is each band member’s favorite color?”
SPENCER: Always liked Red (I’ve only owned red cars), but black and brown are two of my favorite colours to wear.
LUKE: Blue!! I love the blue!!
SIMON: You’ve probably guessed already (that) it’s black. I like the old style Beatles look so I wear it when I can onstage.

“When will we see them in the US? I hope soon. They are the best thing to hapen (sic) to rock and roll music since the Beatles and we sure need their music over here.”
SPENCER: Well, we want to come over, too. We need to get more exposure over in the states, and, when the time is right and that breakthrough happens, we’ll be over like a shot!
SIMON: Well, I’ll be in North Carolina (though Raleigh) & Virginia in August attending a wedding but that doesn’t count. But I hope soon as well! As soon as we get the call I’ll pack my bags and jet off to all you lovely Carolina Foreheads!

Simon“I like the acting they did on Love For Sale on youtube. The dog was precious. Was he any one of theirs? They could go into movies they are all so good looking.”
SPENCER: “Flea” belongs to Matt’s brother-in-law (who’s also called Matt!). Some might say that the dog out-performed the band … :)
SIMON: Gee shocks, thank you! “Flea” is owned by Matt’s brother-in-law who was the brains behind the video and scripting.”

Hey …GUESS WHAT?? I’m gonna give the lads a break for a few hours, but, since you’ve sent in six more questions, I’m gonna conclude “The fab FORE Interview” in TOMORROW’S ish! If you think you know ‘em now, just wait until ya read what’s comin’ up …

But, for now, I’ve gotta feed the cats (or, those who haven’t already eaten most of my peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich that I had on the desk!), flip off the RockStation for about a circle of minutes (360) and get some sleep! So, until tomorrow’s edition, remember the words of the Relic:

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side!

Interview: The Fab FORE (Pt. I)

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Okay, CrownTowners, here it is: the interview with the greatest band to hit the UK stage in forty-plus years! Excited fans are crowding into every venue to see their faves — Spencer Hannabuss (bass, vocals, songwriter, founding member), Luke Bentley (rhythm, vocals), Simon Thompson (drums, vocals) and Matt Hardy (lead, vocals) — as they turn up the amps and crank out the best rock and roll to tempt dancin’ feet and anxious ears since The Beatles!

Now, Charlotte’s known for its love of the UK beat ala Beatles, Hollies, DC5 and such (a lot of fine bands played this area during the Invasion) and soon, The Fore’s gonna be hittin’ the stage (and winnin’ the hearts of millions of fans) worldwide! That includes Charlotte, troops! Natch, to quench your thirst for their awesome Mersey/Hamburg sound, just go here and click on their widget. And check out their performance vids on YouTube® (just type The Fore in the search box)!

Now, I had a chance to get up with the band recently — with your questions in hand (hey … I printed ‘em out exactly as you wrote ‘em! No changes; didn’t wanna leave anything out!) — and they were happy to answer!! (Note: Matt couldn’t make it to the “meeting of the minds” for this, but he had the others answer on his behalf). Now, remember: I had your questions just like you wrote ‘em and that’s how I’m writin’ ‘em here!

The lads’ answers are in bold type:

Spencer“Did any of you know each other well (as friends or schoolmates) before coming together as a band?”
LUKE: We all met through a dating site! haha
SIMON: We could have been a great boy band. lol
SPENCER: Whilst Simon, Matt and I all live in and around London, we all went to different schools and only met through adverts posted on the internet/music magazines/shops
(Luke’s from Manchester)

“How did you come up with your unique sound? You sound so much like the Beatles and the famous groups its awesome. Plus your vocals sound like Beatles The Everleys (sic) and The Hollies.”
SPENCER: It must be in our blood! I think you’ve hit the nail on the head; the sound has a mixture of all those great bands and more. The Beatles were the band that first got us hooked on music, but, without doubt, the music and the harmonies of The Everlys, The Hollies and The Searchers (to name just four) has had a profound effect on our music.
LUKE: Spencer and myself are huge fans of The Everlys.

'Luker'“Who decides who sings the lead part of a song?”
LUKE: Spencer asks us if we want the particular song, then we say “yes” or “no”.
SPENCER: When I’ve written a song I tend to know straight away whose voice it suits the best. Maybe it’s just pure luck? But could you really imagine Luke not singing I Got A Girl or Simon not singing Man of Few Words? It just wouldn’t feel right!

Spencer, this one’s for you: “how long does it normaly (sic) take u to write a song and do u do the music as well?”
SPENCER: Not an easy question to answer. Some songs come very easy. For example, I Want To Be With You took one evening to write, but Love For Sale was hanging around for a month until I worked out the riff, which is pretty key to the whole song. Nearly without exception I’ll come up with the melody before the lyrics. I’ll start off with the melody “hook” or riff and take it from there.
Often a song will come quite quickly, but I’ll be stuck on the last verse.

“Matt sounds like George (Harrison) with his guitar but does not seem to talk to (sic) much. Why is he so quite?” (I think she means “quiet”, guys.)
SPENCER: When Matt has something important to say, he’ll say it. I guess he does all his talking through his guitar!

“What’s the biggest show you have ever played?”
SPENCER: Good question! Biggest, in terms of audience, was undoubtedly in Kent, when we provided the live show at Danson Fireworks Display in Bexley. The organisers told us that 35,000 were expected that evening, although we would never have known it — we couldn’t see anything past the first 5 rows due to the darkness!
And, of course, everytime we play a live show on a High Street, we must play to literally thousands of passers-by. I guess we don’t really ever take a stock of that
(ie: count of exactly how many).

“Luke is so cuddly looking. (NOTE: here, imagine the others chuckling and kidding Luker, who’s blushing a bit — Relic) i saw him sing on i’ve got a girl. does he have one? and is he the one singing on the record of it?”
LUKE: Thanks. I sing it live and on the album. Its my fav song at the mo! And, yes, I do have one.”

Simon“What is it like to play the Cavern where the Beatles started? (followup question, same reader:) How did you get the job there to start?”
LUKE: Playing The Cavern is the best experience I have ever had! Words cannot describe how wonderful it is … Come next time we play! Find out!
SIMON: As soon as you’re onstage you feel the energy creeping out of the walls and you feel that all the great 60’s bands that have played there are watching over you! It’s a huge thrill!!
SPENCER: It’s amazing! Technically it’s not the real Cavern (the old one was blocked up as it was waterlogged and unsafe); it actually is a replica of the old venue (which is next door. Legend has it that you can still access the old Cavern via the womens’ toilets), but it has the same magic as the place that the Beatles played. I recommend everyone to get a chance to visit it and take in the atmosphere. To hear a live band playing the old 60s stuff as you’re coming down the spiral staircase is pretty mind-blowing!
SIMON: I believe we emailed the promoter direct who puts on an event called Sounds of the 60s on a Sunday night and, as we do, turned up, played, and they wanted more! :)

Okay, QC’ers … I’m gonna give the lads a break for a few hours, but remember: more of “The fab FORE Interview” will continue in TOMORROW’S ish! If you’ve got questions for the band, send ‘em on in to me here, and just maybe we can include them in the next post!

But, for now, it’s time for this ol’ Pineville boy to take a litter … er, bathroom break (I knew these cats were gettin’ to me!) and then get Pt. I also onto a coupla other sites, where fans there are waitin’ for it!

Then, I’m gonna find that pack of unopened zzzzzz’s and use ‘em to get a few hours’ shuteye, k? So, until tomorrow’s edition, remember The Relic’s words:

Keep your eyes on the skies, your feet on the ground, your heart with the music … and I’ll see ya on the flip side!

Do We NEED Another Hooters??

Monday, June 9th, 2008

C’mon …
Do we really need this??

With the buzz about a new Hooters® goin’ uptown, folks are startin’ to wonder:WHY?!? It’s not as if we don’t have enough gawkers, stalkers and weird walkers around Tryon & Trade; now we’ve gotta tempt more of ‘em to come up, right?

Actually, the food isn’t that bad there (I dare anyone to try their hottest wings and not go for water immediately after!), but that’s not what guys wanna keep abreast of! (ummm … it’s a pun, people!) And, natch, it’s gonna cause a lotta friction between the Mr. and Mrs. (don’t places like that always cause trouble somewhere along the line?).

So, if ya wanna put a Hooters® in the downtown area, make sure they’re owls, which are infinitely safer. Don’t make boobs outta (OUCH!! Did I just say what I think I said?? Oh. Okay …) the male of the species who walks the downtown tundra with briefcase, bag or ‘brella. There are other places …

CAN YA STAND TV?

We’re definitely a TV generation — especially with hot new shows, better and more intriguing episodes of the existing ones, and more tempting us to flick the remote to “on” position.
But there’s something else that needs a good, solid position and that’s your TV itself! You want a sturdy, attractive stand or mount that’ll give you the best view along with the confidence of knowing that it’s going to last!
Now, you can go through your phone book to look for these, get out there in your stifling-hot car, waste a lot of gas while dodging edgy drivers to get to these places, just to find out you’re spending more than you bargained for …
or
you can go to the best one-stop, online store for TV mounts and stands, shop for the one that fits you the best (and they’re all brand-new and highest-quality!), save money (in fact, they’ll even beat competitors’ prices on selected models by ten bucks!), and even have your selection shipped to you for free!
Save money … time … gas … frustration … and get exactly what you’re lookin’ for … with total satisfaction …
and all ya gotta do is click on this link for the finest plasma tv mount you could ever find … and more!

The Race Is On …

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Well, it’s (apparently) official:
In the main event for the great November Reign show coming up in five months, it’ll be “Bruisin’” Barack Obama pitted against “Big” John McCain (y’know, that almost sounds like a movie character! lol).

Now, in case you’re wonderin’ who this writer’s votin’ for … well, let’s just say anybody who’ll drive the Bush school of thought outta the White House!
Especially in light of the insulting joke about “inbreeding” that Dick Cheney told against West Virginia at the NPC … and when he responded to a reporter’s statement that most Americans think the war’s wrong. (His response: “So??”) When she asked if he cared what Americans think, he said, “No” — then tried some flimsy excuse to “explain” himself out of it!
We don’t need four more years of that nonsense (in fact, we don’t need four more minutes of it)!

Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see what the outcome of the November general election’s gonna be. One thing’s almost certain now: West Virginia, at least, will be votin’ Democrat!

LONGIN’ FOR LOVELY LINGERIE?

Well, we do have ladies readin’ this site, and they all want to look lovely and — when the time’s right — a bit sexy and provocative.
You know they want (and deserve) lingerie that makes them feel great about themselves. But, when they get out to the local stores, they often become disappointed because they often run across limited selection, high prices and, of course, it ends up with a lot of time wasted!

Well, not anymore! In a moment, I’ll give you a link that’ll introduce you to mecca of beauty that offers a tremendous selection of lingerie in all styles for all purposes … and at prices you can afford!
Believe me, you’ll love the look, feel and effect that these beautiful products have! So check them out today, and begin looking (and feeling) more beautiful tomorrow!
So, if you want the most beautiful, comfortable, tantalizing and affordable women’s lingerie, it’s all right at the click of that link you just passed.

The Death of Diddley

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

By now, every rocker around the Queen City (and beyond) has heard the sad news:

Bo Diddley is dead.

The amazing guitarist/singer, whose “cigar-box” guitar and African-based 5/4 rhythm pattern influenced generations of musicians (just an example: Johnny Otis’ Willie and the Hand Jive), died of heart failure at home in Archer, Florida. He was 79.

It’s ironic that the first time I ever heard of him was in an old record that my sister had back as a kid in Pineville. It was by country satirist Ray Stevens and called Santa Claus Is Watching You. Then, I heard the man and was immediately captivated by his simple, bluesy voice surrounded by a thumping beat.

At first, some thought he was just a “one-hit-wonder”, using a gimmick to cross racial barriers. But when acts like Buddy Holly, The Rolling Stones, The Seeds (Get Me To The World On Time), The Strangeloves (I Want Candy) and, later, George Thorogood and The Destroyers and even KISS began emulating the wild beat (someone said it was “shave-and-a-haircut-two-bits” played on mount and floor tom a bit faster), we all realized the worth of this giant!

Recently, someone said if ya didn’t like rock-n-roll, ya didn’t know Diddley! How true that play-on-words is today!
The legend will be missed … but, believe me: His music WILL live on!!

Panthers’ Summer School

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Sheeesh … Summer School; words that most kids hate to hear.
But … the Panthers??
Yep! They’ve got it, more or less. Actually, it’s sort of a warm-up — voluntary practices that’ll last until mid-June (their official training camp doesn’t begin until sometime in July).
Here’s a little bit about their summer school:

• The practices officially are offseason training activities (OTAs). They’re not allowed pads or contact, and they’re closed to the public.

• Popular rookie running back Jonathan Stewart won’t be there. Y’see, his school in Oregon (which uses the quarter system) is still in session, and the NFL doesn’t allow players to work in OTAs until after their classes have ended.

• The other rookies are expected to be on hand. On Tuesday, they did re-sign Curtis DeLoatch, who played six games last season before injuring his knee. Curtis, who was born in Murfreesboro, has played for the New York Giants, New Orleans Saints and the Panthers in four seasons.

I just hope they come outta their summer school with a lot better feeling than a lot of us did years ago!!

GOIN’ WITH THE LOGO

Y’know, as a businessman/media consultant/writer, I’ve gotta put a lot of business cards into action! But it takes forever to have the logos worked up, layin’ the whole card out like ya want it, then having ‘em printed by a local company. Then you’ve gotta wait … and wait … and hope they come out okay.
But there’s one place you can go online and have great ones made … to your specifications, ’cause you make ‘em yourself!
And it’s sooooo easy! I just tried a couple of designs myself, and the process is really simple: Among the six easy-to-follow steps, you pick out a logo from your field, find the template you want, type in a few basic lines (your name, street info, phone number), check out the finished product, and pay (by secured server, natch!) … but only when you’re satisfied!
Now, you have plenty of eye-catching logos to choose from, can go back and rework what you want (it doesn’t matter if you do it a dozen times!), and, when finished, I can guarantee you’ll have a sharp, professional-looking business card ready for print!
Hey … I’ll show you mine, if you’ll show me yours when ya get it done:

Now, this took me all of about five minutes to complete (of course, you’ll want to know what you’re gonna put on the card ahead-of-time. It makes sense, right?)
Believe me, it’s the easiest but most professional card you’d ever want … and you’re 100% in the process! So, why not give the best site for your logo design a visit just by clicking the link I just gave ya?
You’ll really be thrilled with the results!

The Big Web Crash of ‘08

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Well, it happened …

for whatever reason, my PC “blue-screened” itself a coupla nights ago and, though I was able to bring it back, the modem (it and the drivers) was discombobulated!
Natch, I spent a full 24 tryin’ to get it back (huh?? Have ya tried calling Microsoft® lately? After pressing “this” or “that” number, ya still wait forever … and can somebody tell me how a dude in New Delhi knows about my computer?), sooooo … here I am, on an old PC, makin’ sure I get this post done (how old is it?? Dunno … but it’s got a kerosene reservoir and comes with a candle holder!).

Anyway, the “normal” PC (hmph … as if anything’s mornal in Relicworld!) should be up and running at full speed within a coupla days, and we’ll be gettin’ back to our regular posts! So stay tuned …

HILTON HEAD VACATION

While headin’ to Radio Shack™ to shop for modems (nope … didn’t find one I needed there, either!), I talked to a couple who were just comin’ through town on their way to Hilton Head for their vacation. The “MOM” Difference

Friday, May 9th, 2008

People, if there was ever a true slogan, it’s the one below that pic, right??
But didja notice anything different about the wording? (Okay … I’ll give ya a minute …)

Here ’tis: It used the word “MOMS” instead of mothers. Yes, there is a difference, too! Y’see, biologically speaking, any female of child-bearing age and fertile can be a mother. It requires the physical development from embryonic fetus to infant, then the actual, physical birth of that child. Not an easy task, to be sure … but, then again, the female has just mothered the child!

Then … there are MOMS!

We all have our idea of what a “perfect mom” would be like. She not only works her tail off trying to take care of her house, cries her heart out if one of her children is sick or missing, loves her soul out for the benefit of her family, her husband/mate … and, most of all, her children.
She goes the “extra mile”, often taking from herself so her children can have … stays up all night, if necessary, when a child’s sick or just “needs someone to talk to” … talks more to God than she does her own husband about her children, especially as they get older (and, perhaps, married) and out on their own. She’s the most productive prayer warrior and worrier on earth, bar none.
She’s read every children’s book on the market — most of them to her own children, but also to her grandkids. She knows how to patch broken spirits as well as she does torn britches.

She’s the epitome of Proverbs 31.

To me, there was one perfect mom. And, with this (before I close this special post), let me share a story with you: Years ago, when I was just in my early single-digit years, occasionally I’d fall and get hurt. Mama would stop whatever she was doing, grab the mercurochrome, some gauze and a band-aid, wash off the hurt, dress the wound … then kiss it (which did more than any medicine or ointment!).
Then she’d pick me up, and sit down in that old high-back rockin’ chair, putting me on her lap. Slowly, rhythmically, she rock that chair back and forth, rubbing my little back and softly singing the hymn, “Bring Them In.”
In just a few minutes, I was calm, and sleeping.

Years later, in Studio East (a recording studio in Charlotte at the time), I recorded a self-composed country tune called Sing Me A Song — specifically about that time. When I got to the a capella four-part harmony (doing all the voices) of the first bridge, I was to do Bring Them In.
It took me forever to get the take right.
I was too busy crying when I got to that part. That song was mama’s …

Wonderful memories of the perfect mom.
I know you folks have those memories of yours. And …

FOR ALL THE MOMS OUT THERE WHO ARE READING THIS …

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Remember … it’s this Sunday, kids! Make ‘em feel special, okay??

Rare and Unseen: The BEATLES

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

INTRODUCING …THE ULTIMATE BEATLES DVD!

If you’re a fan of The Beatles, trust me … you’ve gotta lay your hands on this piece of history!! I just bought my copy (PS it was the last in the bin; the rest had already been sold!) and, folks, it lives up to everything it’s been adverted to be!

Remember when, on my music site, I toldja about the “just-discovered” footage of the Fab Four from Scotland? It’s on here! Wanna see the very first footage of the Beatles performing? It’s on here! Wanna see my cat’s pawprint? It’s on here … (er, on mine, anyway. Fortunately, it’s just on the jacket … which is cleanable …)

You’ll also be hearing John tell ya who actually caused him to leave Liverpool; seeing one of the earliest shots of George as a Beatle (not seen before!); seeing parts of their “home movies” and a lot more hitherto-unseen Beatle footage; hearing from those who were closest to them, professionally, and the best and most fitting background music for any Beatle documentary … instrumental tracks performed by The Fore!
Rarities, excitement, a history lesson you wouldn’t get anywhere else … it’s all here!! So, this Relic definitely gives it an A++!! (I would say “two thumbs up,” but how’m I gonna type this if I do that??) If you’re a real Beatles fan, ya GOTTA get yer hands on this!! Get it at yer local record store or order online NOW!! Don’t let this rare piece of history slip through your fingers (’sides, it could break that way, y’know!!).

NOW … ON TO OTHER THINGS:

Speakin’ of Beatles, in a way: didja know that Britney and Farrah’s med records weren’t the only ones that were pilfered and breached from UCLA Medical Center? George Harrison’s were back in 2001!

It’s been reported that crimes might’ve been the cause of death of both Sonny Bono (of Sonny and Cher – and, later, Senatorial– fame) and the legendary James Brown. Word is (as I reported here) that Sonny might’ve been beaten to death by drug lords who knew he was about to “blow the whistle” on their setup.

Mr. Brown was said to possibly have been poisoned by thieves who wanted to find the “fortune” he allegedly had buried on his South Carolina estate. In fact, his friends are calling for his body to be exhumed and tested by toxicologists!

And Heather Mills has made one of the most outlandish claims (okay, stupid, then!), saying she doused the head of Sir Paul’s attorney just after the divorce proceedings because she wanted to “baptize” her for something the poor, misguided barrister had done wrong!

IN THE FORE-FRONT

Today, the lads are beginning their rehearsal of numbers for their next CD, but the buzz going on around is that their fanbase is growing fast!!
And … is there a recording contract in their future?? From the reports I’ve been gettin’, there’s a certain record group that’s seriously watchin’ the band, and I FOREcast one in the very near future! Hey … it’s inevitable!!

Their work on the Rare & Unseen DVD is bound to bring a lot of new fans into the ForeFront, obviously.
Personally, I’ve never met more sincere, personable and definitely more energetic young men than Spencer, Simon, Luke and Matt! When you get a chance to hear these lads in action, whether by CD, on Hotspot and other radio networks or live, take it!! You’ll be watchin’ or hearin’ rock history-in-the-making!

A NEW UPDATE ON PETE DINTINO

As you know, we’ve been keepin’ up with “Shadow’s” fight against leukemia (one which is, without a doubt, the bravest and most miraculous fight anyone’s ever seen!). Lately, the reports have been a bit sparse, but, just minutes ago, I received word from Pete’s angel-daughter, Lin. He’s gonna need your prayers and good vibes, Rockaholics:

“Hello Everyone, well the MRI and CT scan didn’t show anything of appreciation. His blood clot is unchanged and they couldn’t find a reason for the fever. The fever eventually went down to a borderline 37.9C. Unfortunately he has slipped a little the GVH has spread from a rash to his gut. They will treat that with high doses steroids, this though will negatively effect his muscular myopathy. His shaking is much worse and will continue to get worse before it gets better. He also has become more confused this last week. They aren’t exactly sure why but they are having a meeting to discuss the possibilities, I will of course will be present for this and can hopefully provide you all with an answer. He needs our continued prayer and support because he is certainly not out of the woods. We have to leave this in God’s hands. In addition to his physical battle he is also fighting a mental battle, he has been in the hospital for over two months and is depressed, as anyone would be in his situation. I’m still confident that God hasn’t brought him this far to let him go, he is going to make it, it just isn’t going to be easy, of course nothing he does is ever easy! Hoping that the next update is a good one, Love Lin”

Okay, Charlotte … ya know what I’m gonna say, right?? Then LETS DO IT!! The superdrummer/friend/rocker/inspiration hasn’t fought this far to drop, right?? So send those prayers and thoughts out “special delivery, next-minute-air” — matter of fact, take a second here to stop and send out some special thoughts and prayers for Peter in this tremendous fight. Then come on back, and we’ll wrap it up, okay??

How To Prevent CarJacking

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Five carjackings in Charlotte — at gunpoint, no less — and the gendarmes don’t think they’re related?
Lemme tell ya somethin’: Somehow, they are! I mean, it’s too much of a “coincidence”

But it brings to light what we have to do to prevent this from happening to us! Here are just a few pointers:

  • First, remember to always park as close to a store (or whatever your destination is) as possible! Carjackers don’t wanna be seen by the public … so the more people around, the safer you’ll be.
  • Secondly, be sure to park where you’re visible to others around you.
  • Thirdly, never have any packages, money, wallets, ID or whatever in plain sight in your vehicle! Put them in the trunk, even if you’re only gone for a few minutes!
  • Fourthly, keep your cell phone right beside you, ready to call for help if needed. If you don’t have a cell phone, get one! Help is just three digits away: 9-1-1!
  • If you’re going from the store or building back to your car, walk with people you know or are comfortable around! There’s strength in numbers, y’know …
  • Fifthly (and if you’re driving in a congested area), keep the doors locked — and never pick up strangers, no matter how destitute or sad they may look! If they need help with a tire, or are broken down somewhere, use that cellphone of yours to call 911, a wrecker or someone to help them!
  • If someone does break in, point a weapon and demand your vehicle, don’t resist! If you do, it’s possible that you won’t need that vehicle again (you know what I mean …)
  • Lastly (but certainly not least) be sure you know the (1) make and model of your vehicle AND (2) your tag number!! If someone does carjack you, get as full a description of the person as possible (identifying marks or scars, hair/eye color, height, clothing) and in which direction they’ve taken your car.

Now, this won’t stop all thieves (some may stop at nothing) … but it’ll certainly keep you more secure and vigilant while you’re out there on the road!

CONFIGURING MEMORY

Every laptop needs it at some point or another, right? The problem most people have, though, is that they don’t know how to go about getting that memory upgrade they need.
Today, though — thanks to the miracle of this little thing we call the Internet — you can not only find the upgrade you need. but get live or phone support, choose the category and manufacturer you want, and more! Believe me, it saves a lot of time and effort!
You’ll also save a lot by going to the site (I’ll give you the link in a moment) and can also sell your laptop memory as well as buy! So, for the best in upgrade and memory configs, you’ll definitely want to go with the place that offers the best and most reliable laptop memory.
So, just click on that link you just passed, and, before ya know it, your laptop’s gonna be quicker and more efficient than ever before! Try it today!

Lloyd Thaxton … So WHAT??

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Lloyd and THE BYRDSAs most of you baby-boomers remember, Channel 9 ran The Lloyd Thaxton Show back in the Sixties. Every rock fan old enough to chew gum would tune in to his show, weekdays at 5 PM.
Over the past few years, Lloyd has become a cherished friend of the Relic, and, though he went on to produce segments for the Today Show (winning Emmys in the process!), Fight Back! with David Horowitz, and co-written a best-selling book, Stuff Happens (and then you fix it!), his heart and soul has still belonged to rock-n-roll! We’ve reminisced many times about the “good old days” of Beatles, Byrds, Brummels and everything in-between-and-after.

And soon you’ll be able to catch his show again! But, this time, it’ll be on the comp DVD, My Name Is Lloyd Thaxton — Soooo WHAT?? (remember? It’s the way he began his show (the audience always responded with that last line!) He sent me a “tease” (she wasn’t my type, but I appreciated the gesture! Actually …) which is (huh? C’mon … it was a joke! A very … small … awww, nevermind) a roughly quarter-hour preview of the DVD.

Listen … if you’re a fan of the man (and, if you were alive, kickin’ and under 21 back-in-the-day, I’ll betcha were!), you’re gonna want the full-strength dose (ie, the full DVD) when it comes out! I’ll keep ya posted, so don’t touch that dial! It’s somethin’ ya don’t wanna miss …

PSSST … WANNA GREAT VACATION SPOT??

Then, trust me … you’ll want to head to one of the most beautiful spots in the Smokies: Pigeon Forge, Tennessee! Now, I’m not recommendin’ it ’cause Dolly talks about it on those TV ads. No, sir! Y’see, this place is mama-recommended!
Each year, when they were both with us (today, they’re both angels), daddy would take mama out to Tennessee for her birthday. They loved the mountains’ beauty and solace, and the friendliness of the homefolks around Pigeon Forge!
Of course, you’ve got DollyWood and so many other attractions (both natural and man-made) there, but, folks, the whole experience is as relaxing as a peanut-butter -and-jelly sandwich with a nice, tall glass of cold milk! You’ll love it! And, if you knew my mama, you know that when she recommended somethin’, it was bound to be good!
Of course, you’re gonna want a cabin to stay in (awww, forget motel rooms! Too impersonal …), and, if you’re like daddy was with mama, you’ll want the best for you and your spouse, “significant other” or family. You’ll want it to be spacious, comfortable and easy on the wallet!
And there’s one place that’ll certainly accommodate you. But … what if I toldja they’d even offer to help ya pay for your gas? Go ahead … read it again so you’ll believe I said that. Yep, they actually want to help ya with the price of your trip!
Sound good?? (Man, ya can’t say anything but, “YEAH!”) Then, all ya gotta do to take advantage of this (and be on your way to a perfect vacation … not far from Charlotte, btw) is to visit the Pigeon Forge cabins. Believe me (and mama) … you’ll be really glad ya did!

The Final “WHOOO!”?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

It was enough to make a grown man cry, I tell ya …
Earlier today, the legendary “Nature Boy” himself, Ric Flair, received the “key to the city” of Columbia, S. C. by its mayor, Bob Coble. Flair — whose real name is Richard Flehr — is best known as the flamboyant wrestler who, bedecked in his sequined royal-blue robe, comes out to the wrestling arenas to the theme of Also Spracht Zarathustra (the 2001: A Space Odyssey theme) and his trademark “WHOOOO!”.
But, this time, he was crying.
He’s due to go up against Shawn Michaels in a match during this Sunday’s Wrestlemania, the annual pay-per-view by World Wrestling Entertainment — and, according to the “stipulation” attached, Flair will retire from the sport permanently, should he lose.

I initially met Ric back during the Mid-Atlantic days, when he burst onto the scene after a stint in the old American Wrestling Association. While cocky and arrogant in the ring, he was like a sponge whenever the cameras weren’t on him, watching greats like Johnny Weaver, legends like Rip Hawk and Swede Hanson and others, studying the cameras, listening intently to advice from the back offices (Crocketts, Scotts and others), and more.
While he seemed to be a playboyish “jet-setter” on-screen, he was always anxious to help out with the March of Dimes Telethons, talk with his fans and enjoy simple pleasures.
Today, while still involved with the Stamford, Connecticut-based WWE, he also has a thriving mortgage loan business here in the Queen City. As astute a businessman as he is a wrestler, Flair deserves the accolades from every wrestling fan and city in America and across the globe.

And we’re proud to call him “one of our own” …

BUYING “DIRECT”

The dream of so many shoppers is to be able to buy the things they need without having to pay the harsh, retail prices that stores charge these days. And that’s even more important to shoppers who want to revitalize their homes (and what better time to start than Spring, right?).
Well, the good news is that I’ve found one that’ll do just that, and you can learn more about them (including some great articles with tips on remodeling bathrooms, kitchens, etc.) by clicking the link I’m about to give ya.
How does it work? Simple: all you have to do is pay reasonably-priced membership dues to join; those dues allow the members to buy their needed goods at manufacturer’s prices instead of the retail mark-ups you find at other stores; you end up with quality goods at amazing savings!
Now … to find out more, just click on the link that’ll take you to the best directbuy for your home needs!

Charlotte, Meet … THE FORE!!

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Okay … my email’s been flooded with notes from fans around the US (and the Queen City!!) who just need to know more about the raw musical energy known as The Fore. Soooooo, I’m gonna kinda/sorta pre-empt the regular post here to oblige ya, Charlotte!:

About ten miles from London, in a town called Bromley in Kent, four young men came together and created a sound not heard since the early Beatles. But they brought something to the musical table that set them apart from any other Beatlesque group: they actually had the same energy, drive, personality and power of the Fab Four within them!

These musicians — Matt Hardy on lead guitar, Spencer Hannabuss (pictured on your right, and who also writes the band’s material) on bass, Luke Bentley on rhythm guitar and Simon Thompson on drums — melded their personalities, and began, just as their famous predecessors, to perform wherever they could find a crowd: streetside, private functions, fairs and small clubs.

They finally caught the attention of the manager of the famous Cavern Club in Liverpool, and now are booked there often. Let me quote from Neil White, their publicist:
“they love them in Liverpool, no surprise maybe except the people of Liverpool are not easily fooled … in fact the manager of the Cavern wanted them to be the resident band.”
Sort of reminds you of another band, doesn’t it? In fact, these lads have all the elements of the Beatles, including their apprenticeships (playin’ the sweaty gigs in small clubs and for low-to-nothing pay), their devoted, grassroots fanbase and the true, ingrained energy that elevated the legends to the top of the charts!

In each member, you’ll see a distinct and lively personality. The intensity of Simon (pictured on the left) captivates many fans, while Luke could pass as the “kid next door”(btw, that was what Michelle M. from Toms River, NJ, observed); lead Matt looks studious and a bit quiet, while bassist Spencer not only exudes “life … maybe a hint of impishness” (again, Michelle’s observation!) but looks a bit like George Harrison.

But their sound is what’s really turning on the fans! Though they’re lookin’ for a record contract at present (and, man, it won’t be long before their names are on a lucrative dotted line!), they already have a CD out called Black & Whiteand even are featured (with six songs!) on the upcoming Rare and Unseen: The Beatles DVD (premiering on April 7).

Now, I’ll be addin’ more about the guys (as it becomes available) in future posts, but, until then, you can get into the ForeFront by clicking on their site. A word of warning: You will be pleasantly excited by what you’re gonna see and hear!

UPDATE ON PETER DINTINO

After a small rough spot, Pete’s still climbin’ back from his fight against leukemia! Folks, I swear I’ve never seen so much courage, fight, belief and pure fortitude outta anyone before. At the rate he’s goin’, it won’t be long before he’s back behind the drumkit, rockin’ like never before! Here’s his daughter’s latest entry (read the whole thing from the beginning at his CaringBridge site for a completely awesome and inspiring story!):

“The intial tests showed nothing. He had an EDG and a Ct scan and they both came back negative. They did take a biopsy of his stomach while they were down there, that won’t come back for a couple of days but hopefully everything is okay. I am back now and he says he’s really glad. I got him to take some of his medicine PO (by mouth) and hopefully if everything comes back negative I can get him back to taking all of them. He is having minor surgery to fix his sub-clave catheter in his neck tomorrow so I’m not sure how up he will feel to phone calls but I will ask him! Thank you again for the prayers and continued support. Love Lin

Well (Y A W N !!) it’s been a long day here in Relicville, so I think I’m gonna go on and open this new pack of zzzz’s and then hit the sack. So I’ll see ya tomorrow when we get back to the QC with news and views, okay??

The Worst SONGS?!?

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

A word to Channel 9: Now you’re gettin’ into Relic Territory with your “Worst Songs of 1990″! In other words, you’re wrong on a few of ‘em!!

Okay … I’ll give ya Macarena and a few others, but Achy, Breaky Heart? Tell me: Have you ever known a song after The Bee Gee’s disco hits that have turned more people on to dancing? Granted, that tune has plagued Billy Ray Cyrus for years (seems he can’t get away from it, though he’s done a lot of other great ones), but it did get more people onto the line-dance floor (read: a form of exercising, socializing and timing) than at any time since Stayin’ Alive.

And Guns ‘N Roses November Rain? C’mon … you’ve gotta be kiddin’! The song is a story about a guy’s love, from dating to tragic end. It’s a modern-rock classic!

Yep … you’ve got Michael Boreton … er, Bolton .. right. This cat is dull, and about as original as a 99 cent hamburger! But don’t lump Ugly Kid Joe’s version of Cat’s In The Cradle in with him, okay? It was almost a perfect cover of Harry Chapin’s superhit … tailored for the new generation!

The rest are pretty much on-the-money, though.

Now, this isn’t to knock WSOC at all; in fact, it’s been my fave telly since the days of Joey the Clown, Kilgo’s Kanteen and more! Despite the other channels’ best efforts, they’ve always come through with the best news programming in the Charlotte area!
But they’re a little off when it comes to pickin’ the “best” or “worst” rock/pop songs of the ’90’s (hey … don’t blame them! Their sister station, WSOC-FM, is one of the foremost in country music!). Better luck with the New Millennium playlist, guys …
