Words of Thanks …

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Y’know, it really isn’t that hard to do …

As we’re headin’ outta the Thanksgiving festivities (but with turkey sandwiches to come for days yet, right??), we’ve gotta keep in mind whatever we mentioned yesterday as our blessings … and make ‘em fit today!

Here are just a few to keep in mind:

You’re ALIVE and FREE!! It doesn’t matter who-says-what, who’s left you, how bad your job might be, or how financially tight things appear, as long as you’re (and, here, I quote my friend Ty Boyd) “98.6 degrees and breathing”, you’ve got a solid chance to rise to your challenges! Nobody’s keepin you down but you! You’ve got the opportunity to get through the tough times, just by reaching out and finding out HOW! And what you’re on right now is a great place to start! For more help, check out any of Ty’s writings, or read Stuff Happens! and then you fix it by my mentor, the late Lloyd Thaxton and John Alston. But one of the best — and I dare you not to learn from this book — is The Magic of Thinking Big by Dr. David Schwartz. HEY …. YOU’RE ALIVE!! You’re FREE!! Now, USE those two things to make a happy life for yourself now, and throughout 2009!

YOU’RE IN THE QUEEN CITY!! HOME OF OPPORTUNITY!! If you’re in need of assistance, we’ve got the Salvation Armies, Crisis Assistance Ministries, Uptown Shelters and so much more to help you! If in need of work, and no one is hiring, lemme ask ya: What are YOUR talents?? Then why not start your OWN small business? It can be anything from housecleaning (I knew a young lady with lupus who successfully did just that!!) to yardwork and landscaping, making phone calls for businesses to writing blogs or business reviews on the web! Meanwhile, you can keep your eyes and ears open for “help wanteds” around town!

WE’VE GOT SOME TREMENDOUSLY POSITIVE CHANGE STARTING ON JAN. 20!! And, if he’s true to his word, President Obama’s gonna be hittin’ the ground running once he sets foot in the Oval Office!
Word is that he might reverse Bush’s decision and allow extensive stem-cell research! This research would be phenomenal as it could result in cures for so many afflictions.
There are many positives about our new President-to-be! Forget race, forget the junk that twisted media has tried to spread. We’re AMERICANS here … and that means giving him our support as we’re giving him a solid chance!

MOST OF ALL, WE’VE GOT FAMILIES AND FRIENDS. Whether ya know it or not, I personally guarantee that someone in this town is on your side, and is really hoping the best for you in 2009! Oh .. our families? Listen … they’ve been with you since the “get-go”! And even if you’ve lost some of them over the year, there are always one or two (even goin’ into the “cousin” category) who love you!

Now … let all that soak in a bit, and realize: WE’RE REALLY BLESSED, CROWN-TOWNERS!! Next step: Carry those blessings in our minds and heart throughout this coming season … and on into 2009!

HARD DRIVIN’

As anyone who uses a notebook or standard PC knows, it’s essential to have a good hard drive for your machine. Unfortunately, these can become so loaded with files, pics, music and more that you can find your computer’s existing drive running out of capacity.

Now, the link I’m about to give will lead you to a spot where you can get all kinds of hard drives, whether it be USB, portable, solid state or any other ones … and at a lower price than you’ll find at standard stores!
You can also search for hard drives by manufacturer, price range, rotation speed and even storage range (1 - 50 GB). And you can also get free shipping!

Wachovia’s Doing WHAT?!?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Okay … somebody tell me that this isn’t happening …

I mean, it was my understanding that the big financial giants were begging for bailouts — that they were in dire straits! Still, they reward their head honchos with hefty severance packages, bonuses and other perks, as if money still could be picked off a mythical tree!

Some even brag about the “help”: AIG, who looked for the biggest bailout of all, now boasts in some of their print ads: “With over 700 billion dollars in assets!” (ummm … does that bring back ghosts of recent news reports?)

But WACHOVIA?? Even if our hometown bank wasn’t included in the “bailout”, then how in the world can ten of their top execs take 98.1 million bucks in severance packages with a clear conscience? For average people like us, it’s gonna look greedy! Sure, Wells Fargo’s gonna pay it to ‘em, but … well, let’s face it: ANY megabux payoff’s gonna look bad to the average consumer, considering the current financial crisis and no matter who takes it.

But there’s a very pleasant twist to this tale:
This is Charlotte, where our “suit” community is known for their courtesy, common sense and concern for their customers. According to The Charlotte Observer, some of these execs may opt out of that “package”, opting to stick with the merged companies instead. And local sources tell The Relic that it’s for two reasons: They wanna stay, and they don’t wanna put a sour taste in the public’s mouth!

The public. People who have banked, worked and dealt with Wachovia for years (yep, me too!). Folks who’ve seen the philanthropic side of the financial giant.
And, best of all, it all comes around to the same basic point: This is CHARLOTTE — THE QUEEN CITY! We’re known to have a heart …
That’s why we’re still growing while others are just struggling …

A QUICK CORRECTION

Didja hear the kind plug that TV’s Craig Ferguson gave us this past week? He talked about how he liked Charlotte … including its basketball team, The Charlotte Hornets!
Ummm … Craig?? They’re a … New Orleans team! We’re the BOBCATS now!!
So, while we ‘preciate the plug, we wanted to bring ya up-to-speed a bit … and, of course, invite you back! Just steer clear of our ice skating rinks, and you’ll be fine! (Go ahead … ask, folks!)

GREAT RELIEF FOR DISNEY SPELLS

C’mon … everybody wants to go to Disney World at least once, right? I mean, to take in the beauty and splendor, the magic that Walt dreamed up all those years ago makes the ultimate vacation!
Now, with Christmas comin’ up, what more exciting present to give your family (and especially your kids) than a vacation package that includes the nation’s fantasy capital? You’d be surprised at how affordable these can be … and even more amazed at the fun and memories you’ll have there!
There’s something for everybody: From the legendary Magic Kingdom Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, the world-renowned and educational Epcot Center, and so much more, there’s happiness and thrills around every corner!
And making your plans is easy to do: Just click on this link for the best in Disney vacations to make reservations! Then, when you’re ready, pack your bags, your kids … and plenty of film … and take off for the vacation of dreams!

Seems Like Old Times …

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

With all the talk goin’ on about the shape of the economy, folks around the nation (and ourarea) are turnin’ more and more to some very unique and innovative ways of handling the cash/job shortage.

Or … so they think!

Already, I’m hearin’ from people in Harrisburg, Pineville, Davidson and right here in town talkin’ about goin’ into business for themselves, doing service work (such as: repairing or detailing cars, doin’ handyman work, housekeeping or even becoming plumbers!).
Some … no, make that many … are starting vegetable gardens; whether they’re yard-size, like my daddy had, or just small planters in apartments, these are planted in hopes of deflecting the rising costs of food. Besides, “home-grown” is always better than the “canned” stuff, right?

Fortunately, Charlotte’s recycling plan is showing benefits during this crunch — but folks are going beyond that and learning how to re-use quite a few plastics, metals and other items we once took for granted.

We’re also learning the value of car-pooling, taking the CATS buses and light rail, and even just “hot-footin’ it” to wherever we need to go (I personally put in about seven to ten miles every day that way)!

But, y’know what? If we look back … say, fifty, sixty years ago … what were we doin’ then? Yep … the very same THING! And not only did we survive and bode well during those times, but we also were healthier, happier … and became stronger as a community!

These tough times aren’t gonna last forever … but the benefits that we derive from “tightening our belts” can stick with us for a lifetime!

WORD FROM LAS VEGAS …

Oh … forgot to tell ya: Got an email from the Stephens’ (remember? They were movin’ out to Nevada?). Well, they finally made it into Las Vegas, and they decided to check out the town by reserving a hotel that was close to the action. Besides, they had to wait a coupla days for their furniture and other stuff to arrive.

Anyway, they were totally confused about which one to take — until they found the site I’m gonna introduce you to in a moment. Not only does it have all the fab hotels in and around the sleepless city, but it’ll also give ya maps, where the pools are, tips to enjoy your vacation, and more!
Now, I’m not gonna tell ya which one they settled on, but I will say that, for anybody who’s going to Vegas for vacation, or as a stopover on a business trip or whatever reason, you’ll find this site invaluable! From choices (and, man, do you ever have quality choices!) to amenities, helpful tips to amazingly affordable prices, you’ll find it all when you book a las vegas hotel through these folks.
And it’s as simple as clicking that link I just gave you! So why not check it out, and plan your next vacation with their help? Your visit or vacation will be one you’ll remember for a lifetime … and, who knows? You just might run into a few folks you know!

What Racial Bigots Don’t Know

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Man, you’ve gotta be kiddin’ me!!
I mean, I thought this racism crap was pretty much over and done with! But, now, with our first African-American President-elect, it seems the slimy maggots who advocate that junk have wriggled their way out of the dung of the past and are tryin’ to infect us again! It’s even happened here locally … but I’m not gonna give ‘em even a word of publicity by tellin’ what happened or where. They don’t deserve it!

Now, I don’t haveta worry about them readin’ this post, considerin’ that, collectively, they have the intelligence to only understand four-letter words, but, if ya wouldn’t mind readin’ this to them, it’d be appreciated.

FACTS ABOUT THIS RACIST NONSENSE:

They call themselves true Americans, and are sooooooooo dead-set against terrorism. But, with each threat, with each mock “lynching”, with each intimidating tactic, these clowns are breaking a FEDERAL LAW!! It’s called TERRORISTIC THREATENING!! And the punishment, especially as it applies to hate crimes, can and should be severe!!

They say “White is Right” … but can’t prove it. Why? ‘Cause one color is never “right” over another! But they try to “prove” it with violence — thus, shooting their own “theory” in the foot (if not three feet higher).

They glorify the pomp and pageantry of everything from the Confederacy to Nazism without realizing what they’d actually put up with if they were part of the original causes: filth, searing pain, days without sleep, incessant thirst, sweat, mind-numbing fear — and the haunting eyes staring from the dead — those of friends, neighbors and perhaps family — lying around them. Day after day, week after week. Insects crawling over open sores, and nowhere to immediately “relieve” themselves.
Hmph … if anyone who fought in those wars could see these idiots now, they’d probably laugh themselves to death. Right or wrong, what these men went through would turn these would-be “heroes” into little boys callin’ for their mommies …

Now, if someone can prove that other races are “inferior” … and I mean intellectually prove it with facts and figures … then let’s see ‘em. Here. I’ll print ‘em, okay??
If not, KEEP YOUR BIGOTRY, YOUR HATE, YOUR TERRORISTIC CRAP TO YOURSELF! I …

oh. wait … just thought of somethin’ …

Hey, ummm, racist people?? Have … have you ever been in an accident resulting in serious injury? (hmph … sound like one of those TV lawyers!) Ever had an operation? Anything that … well, required a blood transfusion??
Well, guess what, my misguided, neophytic cretins?? There’s about a good chance that the blood you received … ummm, came from an African-American!
Understandably, the American Red Cross won’t give precise stats as to which race gives what percentage for two reasons: because each city differs in ethnic density (some lower, some higher), and to ward off … er, “purists” (don’t make me gag!) like you!
At any rate, you know what that means, don’tcha?? It means you’ve got the blood of the race you hate, running through your very own system, right now! So, lemme ask ya … do you hate yourself??

Think about it. For once, crack a book without some skinhead peerin’ over your shoulder (remember … I usedta be a cult member decades ago, and, brother, this racist junk is nothing more than a brainsucking cult!), study other races with an open mind, and make decisions on your own! You just might find yourself coming up with a different conclusion … one that’s sensible!

Start with The Bible (always a good place to start). Hint: The first part follows the Israelites, the last with the life and lessons of Jesus …
a man …
who wasn’t white!

A Reflection on Veterans …

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

With our veterans being honored here at home, around the country and world, yesterday, I just felt the need to reflect a bit. (NOTE: AN IMPORTANT REQUEST FOLLOWS THIS POST. READ IT CAREFULLY, AND, IF YOU AGREE, LET’S ACT ON IT!)

Y’see, I came from a family of vets (including my sons, Tim and Mike; even I’m a veteran!). Three different wars (WW II, Vietnam, Iraq). And there’s something that deeply impresses me and, though I’m definitely against this damned war, makes me so proud of each and every one of these men and women, no matter which forces they serve:

They were, once, just bagboys, busboys or just kids gettin’ their kicks from revved-up engines, pretty girls or the latest video game on the Internet. Others were already married, but having a hard time gettin’ their finances, feelings and other things in order to transition from “single” to “married”. Still others were irresponsible, opting for Dad or Mom to carry them when they could’ve been out working and helping. Many times, they were just plain disrespectful of anybody who wasn’t their “bud”.

Then … they enlisted. They made it through boot camp. AIT. Then … to the quartermaster to gear up for an overseas tour in a war-embattled area …

And they came back …

They’re now well-mannered and disciplined heroes. Oh, they still love revved-up engines, pretty girls or the latest video game on the Internet — but they know they have their place. There are other things that have priority. And as far as the girls? They’ve learned respect. Others were already married when they left, but, upon returning, they have a tremendous love for their wives/husbands and/or children. They’re intent on working out any challenge they have in order to have a happy family life.
They’ve become responsible, not wanting Dad or Mom to carry them. You see, they learned the worth of hard work and discipline. And, today, they’ve learned to respect every person, regardless of race, creed, sex, color, age or religion.

And get this: They’ll be our city, town, county, state and Federal leaders one day!! And, from what I’ve been able to see and experience, we’re gonna be in great hands in the future!

So, veterans, this Relic bows his head and thanks God for each of you … no matter where or which war you served … YOU ARE OUR HEROES!

SPECIAL REQUEST: It’s really a shame that our young people can go over to foreign soil and fight, showing the ultimate devotion to this country …
YET
CAN’T EVEN GO INTO A STORE AND BUY A SINGLE BEER WHEN THEY GET BACK … BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT 21!

Whatcha think, people? Charlotte Observer staff who reads this? TV anchors who read this? Can we effect a change?? For our heroes??
Write every Mayor, Congressman, Governor, etc that you can think of!
Forty years ago, we started a protest to give 18-year-olds the right to vote! We’ve still got it in us to help out now!
(and, yes, I’ve already mailed my letters … and sent emails … where are yours?)

MORE ON DIET SUPPLEMENTS

In my travels around the states and Canada, I’ve run across so many people who want to lose weight … and that’s good! But … there are loads of products that make promises and tell you absolutely nothing about their high-priced “pills”.
That’s not good, obviously; you’ll want a business that’ll not only provide you the best choices at the lowest prices, but will actually explain the “whats”, “whys”, “side effects” of their products, and much more! That way, you can make an intelligent decision!
And, listen … as you’ll see when you click on the link I’m about to give you, you’ll get just that! If fact, there are quite a few celebrities who endorse these specific pills (like Julia Roberts, Oprah Winfrey and Angelina Jolie)!
Now, like I said, it only takes a click of this link to take you to the best in weight loss pills. You’ll appreciate their products, their information — and their prices! So why not click there now, okay?

Was THIS The Trouble??

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Geez … I just started tonight’s post and I’ve already ticked off a few Republicans!
But I’m not talkin’ against Gov. Palin at all … ’cause she wasn’t the problem (’sides, I do value my life!)!
Okay, then, hotshot … what was the problem with the campaign??

Well, I didn’t say “THIS Was …”, did I?? Nope — I asked ya, “Was THIS …?” Need yer input.
And I’m talkin’ about the media here! I mean, they were all over Sarah Palin like butter on a freshly baked biscuit! And it was, for the most part, about everything but her political accomplishments, ability to perform the job … or her stand on the issues.

In other words, they didn’t give the lady a fair shake in the recent campaign! And we, bein’ a nation that just loves the sensationalistic, ate it up like the earlier-mentioned biscuit!!

Y’know, somehow, I’ve got a feelin’ that, though she’s raising a fine family, was a former small town-mayor, Governor of America’s (geographically) largest state and having to balance all these duties (and all their required concerns) and still maintain dignity and composure-under-fire;
though she’d traveled thousands of miles stumping for Sen. McCain, dealt with accusations and blows back home in Alaska, and still maintained a loving relationship and time with her husband and family …
it all just didn’t matter to the media.

They were more concerned about everything from her looks to accent to slip-ups that she made while on the campaign trail. And it was the slip-ups that became the focus more … and more.

THEN THEY BROUGHT IN A FEYKE PALIN …

Now, don’t get me wrong: I like Tina Fey as a comedienne, actress, mom … and, quite honestly, to meet the woman “offstage” is like talking with Everywoman. She’s very sincere, somewhat shy, a bit aloof herself … but definitely genuine!
But when the SNL script called for her to lampoon Gov. Palin, it set in everyone’s mind that the former VP candidate was actually like that! And that image, coupled with a media blitz straight out of Entertainment Tonight®, stuck with American voters to the end of voting day … and is still prevalent!

Of course, when they heard Sarah make a mistake (like calling Africa a country and about some flak between the McCain and Palin camps over the fact that the Governor didn’t get a chance to give her concession speech when Sen. McCain did), these “informed” media seem to forget that the lady was thrust almost immediately into the national spotlight for the very first time! Everybody — here and abroad — was watching her.

That brings me to a second question: If you were in front of the cameras and mics and millions of viewers for the very first time ever, would you get a little nervous and maybe slip up on your words or facts?

Then ya know how she felt … and how the mistakes could have easily happened. And, during the bittersweet concession speech (handled remarkably well by Sen. McCain), she undoubtedly thought (again, remember that she wasn’t familiar with the protocol here) that she would have a turn at the mic as well! So, you see, SARAH PALIN IS HUMAN!

But — since what’s said or done by the VP candidate (intentional or not) can change the direction of any Presidential election — couldn’t all this media mishandling have been one of the contributing causes of the Republicans’ defeat?

Like I said, it wasn’t her fault; she gave, I believe, one of the best showings of any first-time VP candidate … especially someone who’d never been in this much of a national spotlight … before!

I voted for Obama, because he was the better choice; but I truly admire Gov. Palin .. and honestly hope she shoots for a high goal like this again in 2012!

But I’d appreciate your opinion …

My God, Mrs. Dole!!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

All right … now this idiotic mud-slinging has gone too far!!

Senator Kay Hagan has every right to throw a “cease-and-desist” order against Elizabeth Dole (a woman who, prior to this, had my admiration and support!). I mean, how low can you go with this nonsense?
Sen. Hagan is a fine, Christian woman with some terrific values … and to slander/libel her (hey … check the NCGS … it’s exactly that. I included both because it’s hit both the media and the streets!) is a disgrace!

Ahhhh … but wait!!

Aren’t we seein’ more desperation out of Republicans lately?? They’re about to lose their clout around the nation, so, whether McCain’s camp, McConnell’s or Dole’s, they’re scraping for anything they can find!
Interesting to note the last line of the Observer article: “Some polls show Dole trailing Hagan in her bid for re-election. “

So, Sen. Hagan, I wish you ALL the luck with your “desist” order. Just be sure to MAKE IT STICK!!

We’ve gotta stop this bovine defecation somehow! It’s pathetic

WEDDING BELLS COMING??

And ya know how it alllllll got into motion, right?  The dude goes down on one knee, clears his throat a million times, sweats an ocean, and then … pulls out the felt-covered box with …

Yep.  But what’s in that box?  You want the very best to adorn that third-finger-left-hand until that day comes when you add to it, right?  Well, in order to have that, I’m gonna give you a link in a minute that’ll make you, your intended, and your wallet, very, very happy!

So go ahead … and have a wonderful and blessed marriage …

The Sixties and Mother Earth

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Beautiful, isn’t it??

Y’know, one of the grandest thing about the Queen City is our knack for appreciating and preserving our natural beauty — that which has lasted since the beginning of time.

Whether it’s the surroundings of Freedom Park or the woods and natural flora and fauna around the city, there’s a serenity where, within, we find a oneness with nature, God … and ourselves.

Now, there are those who want to tear down that and put up concrete-and-steel corporate structures that’ll please CEOs of bigwig organizations.  Whether it’s in Pineville, Matthews, or Charlotte itself, it’s all a terrible reminder that, in fact, we’ve gotten away from what Mother Earth has provided … the natural that has lasted for eons … and are replacing it with what the Almighty Dollar can provide … the synthetic that will last only a few years (and require mondo repairs and security)!

We worry about losing the beauty of the land … yet build over it as though our edifices-to-greed will be more profound; we protest that global warming is destroying natural habitats … yet continue to shun EPA standards and warnings for our factories; we say that the financial problems on Wall Street (and beyond) are tearing up our wallets … yet continue to spend lavishly and build like there’s no tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the beauty that is still around us … the woods, the trees, the streams and creeks … are still — impervious to the desires of men who want to destroy them in favor of monetary gain.

In the Sixties, the main thrust of young people — other than peace, love and rock-n-roll — was the preservation of our natural resources.  We loved the way God put everything.  Today, many of those same “flower-children” have taken steps to preserve and use nature in a positive way.
Ecosystems are becoming more popular than ever; we, who were raised in that era, are more environmentally-conscious; the building of new and unique Earthstations — great-looking, energy-effieicnt houses made of earth and discarded items (hey — Google™ it if you’ve got a  computer) — are becoming popular in the Southwest.  Bottom line: We appreciate Mother Earth and all its natural resources.

But there are some who feel it’s better to bulldoze and build at maximum  expense, with manmade materials, in order to feed our desire for wealth and clout.
Fortunately, Crown Town still has a handle on natural preservation.  In doing so, we not only honor nature and our forefathers — we honor God.  Yep.  See, if we tear up His work for ours, we’re saying, in essence,
We can do it better … your stuff is just gettin’ in the way!

And that, readers, is not a healthy thing to do.  It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature … and you can’t “one-up” God.

And, through all the arguments, the debates, the worries and frustrations …
the woods, the trees, the brooks and creeks stand still … impervious … and waiting …

Andy and Opie and The Fonz LIVE!!!

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Awww, c’mon … you’re bound to have seen the best Obama campaign video EVER!!  If not, I’ll give you the link in just a minute.

Y’see, Ron Howard, Andy Griffith and Henry WInkler reprised their roles as Opie, Sheriff Andy Taylor and The Fonz (hmph … as if ya didn’t know, right??) for an ad touting Sen. Barack Obama as the best Presidential candidate.

If only for three minutes-and-change, we were taken back to Mayberry (okay, who down here doesn’t know where that is??) … and then to the leather-jacketed hero of Arnold’s, leanin’ against a ‘57 Chevy where Opie turned into Richie

Both vignettes caried the famous style of the TV shows on which they were based: Andy and “Ope” by the fishin’ hole, with the famous “whistling” tune was in the background (btw, the man who did the actual whistling, Earle Hagen – who also composed the tune called “The Fishin’ Hole” — died recently), was warm and family-oriented — and filmed in black-and-white!
The other one, with Richie and Fonzie, had the Fifties music in the background, the humor and coolness that’s identified with Winkler’s character — and even was the same-grade color film as the original show!

It’s one you’ve just gotta see!  Though just posted over the past coupla days, it’s already gotten nearly one million hits!

See for yourself at Funny-Or-Die.com.

Whether you’re votin’ for Obama or McCain, you’re still gonna enjoy the trip down memory lane (and, btw, Henry hasn’t lost “the look”) …

Needing A Job In Charlotte?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

It’s close to Christmas, bills are piling up, you don’t have much to eat …
and you’re out of work.
Worse, you can’t find a job, no matter how many businesses have your applications; you’re either (a) too old, (b) not experienced, (c) too young, (d) over/underqualified or, in some cases, don’t even “look the part”.
And don’t fool yourself; there are still places out there whose bosses won’t hire you on the basis of race, gender, disability or heritage!

So, what are you gonna do?  If ya get SSI, SSD or some other governmental check, you already know it doesn’t last long!  And ya can’t keep borrowing money off kinfolk, pawning your belongings or whatever.
The frustration mounts because you know you can do a good job … if someone would just hire you!

Hey … I’ve got an idea!  Why not consider taking your talents (whether it’s mechanics, excelling at math, repairing small appliances, or even just cleaning)  and work for youself??  I mean, get all the material you need, including equipment (it usually doesn’t cost much), paperwork (receipts, invoices, ledgers, business cards and whatever else your home business will require), space to properly do your work — and, of course, check on licensing in your area — then, when you’re ready, advertise; promote the dickens out of your business!

Now, ya won’t make a lotta money right off, of course; a good customer base has to grow, right?? But, if you stick with it, and let everybody you come in contact with know that you’re there and “open for business”, you could be on your way!
Just make sure you have fair prices and the absolute BEST in quality workmanship! And always treat your customer like you’d wanna be treated!

Natch, there are other ways to beat the wolf from your door: Check with the Employment Security Commission; check the Internet; go to temporary-employment agencies; ask around — your friends or family might know of someone who’s hiring and can put in a “good word” for ya. If nothing else, and you can handle the job (usually manual labor), apply with labor pools! Now, you’ll have to be there when they open (usually at dawn) and wait to be added to a worklist — but, in very short time, you could be working … and, if the employer of the contract company likes your work, you could end up with a permanent job! Either way, you’re paid!

My daddy and practically every uncle I had was self-employed … and every company you see throughout town — from the humongous stores on N. Tryon to the little “Mom-and-Pops” you see farther out S. Tryon and throughout town — started with one person having a vision, and starting his/her own business!

If they could do it — and if you need the income — why can’t you??

FINALLY — Some Election Hope!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

FANTASTIC!!!!

With the new election on the horizon, it’s awesome to see that, finally, the youth of this country are making a significant dent in the political machine!

For years, we (of a prior generation, and in our youth) had fought (demonstrated and protested) to have a voice; the Establishment seemed to roll over us, thinking of us as just a bunch of pot-smoking, lazy juvenile delinquents.
And we couldn’t understand how we could be drafted (ie, forced) into an Army, sent overseas with rifle in hand to kill — and die — for something we didn’t believe in, yet, upon our discharge, not be allowed to vote because we were “too young”.

Thankfully, all that’s changed.  But, although young voters will be pouring into the booths this November, there are still some issues that need to be addressed:
For example:  Our young people still can be sent overseas with rifle in hand, to kill — and maybe die – in a war they don’t believe in.  Others are filling our colleges — magnificent minds that, if actually heard and taken seriously by the government and most adults, could literally change the world!!
But, if they want to purchase anything from a simple beer to a singlewide trailer …
they’re too “young and irresponsible.”

That’s bull …trouble here) BOVINE DEFECATION!!

Years ago, a band from New Jersey called The Knickerbockers recorded a song called The Coming Generation (you can either download it or look for the old 45 RPM record, on Challenger label, called LIES. It’s the flip side of that record.) that tells what we’d be doing as we grew older.

We hold the future in our hands, the band sings. Now, if that’s the case — and, considering we’re infinitely more progressed in our world today — why don’t we treat our young people with a coupla new ideas:

Like, RESPECT AND TRUST??

Look … they know the rules. They know the responsibilities. And they have more common sense and knowledge than you think! And, come November, they’re gonna be totally influential in electing our new President!

And that, people, is a fantastic start! And, once the new Prez comes into office, let’s hope he appreciates those votes … those voices … and starts makin’ changes in favor of young people around the nation …

’cause they honestly deserve it!!

Email About “The Debate”

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Hey … remember when I asked ya to email me with your comments? Well, when I ran that bit about the VP debate, the inbox had no less than 20 responses … some of which I’ve gotta share with you (no, I’m not givin’ names, for privacy purposes):

Whose side are you on? Either you like Biden or Palin. If you vote like you write, you’re not going to make any difference!”
Well, man, I’m on no one’s “side”. Yeah, I’m classed as a Democrat, but ya don’t count yer chickens before the hen lays the eggs, right? So, until the dawn of election day, I’m keepin’ an open-mind. (and what’s wrong with my writin’, bunky? Hey … I get the readership; most of ‘em have followed my columns and articles for nearly a quarter-century with no complaints, and I’ve always written this way …)

“Sarah Palin sounded like an excited schoolgirl. That ’shout-out’ was not aproppriate (sic … it’s “appropriate”) in a debate setting …”
Listen — you’ve gotta remember that Mrs. Palin has just been thrust onto the world stage; and she had her first big national showing during the debate. She reacted just as if an actor, upon his/her first nod for an Emmy, won the award and hadta give a speech.
Besides, who was she giving the “shout-out” for? Schoolkids!! Would that others in the political arena cared as much.
Overall, I think she did a splendid first-time job

“It is obvious that McCain has her for window dressing. He knows Hilary (sic. Two “l’s” with this Hillary!) was big popular (?? ummm … what??) with woman voters. He is a man that thinks if he has a pretty woman to run with him he can get the woman vote.”

I have to agree with you on points. He (1) did notice Sen. Clinton’s drawing power. So he apparently borrowed from that and tapped Ms. Palin to be his running mate. Granted, she’s not as qualified as others who could’ve made the cut; but (2) it seems more than coincidence that Mrs. Palin was Governor of the same state that Republicans have targeted for off-shore drilling!

“When she’s got a family at home, with a pregnant unmarried daughter and one child with Downs Syndrome, she should stay there and help them and not be in Washington!”
Let me clarify something, okay? She and her husband, Todd, have a family at home! And the man is more than willing to help with that. Concerning her daughter, Bristol: She’s not needing “round-the clock” care; she’s needing her parents’ support which, whether she were VP or the first female Pope, Mrs. Palin will continue to give. She appears to be a very loving, caring mom. And, concerning her youngest child: From James Monroe to Abe Lincoln, William McKinley to Andrew Jackson and Calvin Coolidge, Presidents had children who were either disabled, injured or whatever. So why can’t she handle her job and take care of the child? Remember — as with our government, a successful marriage is a two-party system, working hand-in-hand. (Somehow, I’ve got a feelin’ that, while marriages work that way, our government’s headin’ for some kind of estrangement …).
Anyway, she and Todd are workin’ together for the welfare of their family. So, though I still believe Obama’s the right choice, I admire the courage, stamina and personality of Sarah Palin. Even after this election, I hope she finds total success in her endeavors!

BURNIN’ THE FAT AWAY

Motorcycles Take Another One

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

DISCLAIMER: The photo you see on your left is not of Saturday’s accident. It’s just one I found on the web to make a point.

The Observer reported the news today: “A 49-year-old Shelby man died this weekend in a motorcycle accident in Gaston County … the accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. Saturday … alcohol was not a factor in the crash …”

For the seventh time over the past three years, someone I know has died at the hands of a motorcycle. I witnessed the combined funerals of a husband-and-wife in Ashland, just prior to the last OCW event. Both were officers of the law … off-duty, enjoying a “second honeymoon”, as such. And they lost their lives at the wheel of a single motorcycle crash.
The culprit? A blown tire!

Look … it doesn’t matter who you are, or whether you ride a hawg (Harley) or motorized bicycle (Yamaha), you’ve gotta remember how dangerous the drivin’ can be! Now, before anyone jumps into my comment box to rip my head off, lemme tell ya that I dig bein’ behind the wheel of a heavy-horsepower hog; the feel of freedom is totally unmatched. And I’m definitely not puttin’ cyclist down for a moment. In fact, for the most part, they’re more skilled and aware than other drivers.

Now, we’re all gonna miss Ricky — in fact, our hearts go out to the entire Ivey family. But this tragedy brings a major “heads-up” for every biker:

No matter where you’re goin’ on yer wheels, make absolutely sure that everything on your bike is in TOP CONDITION! If you’ve got even the slightest worry about your tires’ wear, or your carb’s cleanliness, brakes or whatever, just park it and take the car. Or walk.

When you’re on the road, PAY ATTENTION!! It only takes yer mind to wander once to hit, spinout or roll. And remember — there aren’t any seat belts or roll bars to help ya!

Lastly (and I can hear bikers all the way to L. A. sayin’ this. In fact, a dude fresh off the Sturgis run told me this one), “KNOW YER BIKE LIKE YOU WANNA KNOW YER WOMAN/MAN!” I wanna include, KNOW YOUR ROUTE LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR HAND!

We can’t afford any more deaths like we experienced Saturday, folks! So, sure … enjoy the ride; but keep it safe, okay?

KEEPIN’ IT FIT AND TRIM

Now, while we’re keepin’ our bikes sleek and fine-acting, so we should do the same for ourselves! Of course, there are loads of diet supplements and helps to get you into the shape and style you want; but, of all these, only one site can give you the lowdown on the top brands. They review the best diet pills, the pros and cons (if any) of each, their ingredients, and even give you links on where to buy them for less! And get this: They even go so far as to list some effective weight loss tips for you~

But you’ll find even more when you click on the link I’m about to give you. So, if you’re in the market for the best in diet aids, but don’t know where to go, just click on this link which will start off by telling you more about the popular supplement, Trimspa.
All in all, you’ll really appreciate this site for giving you the “heads-up” and info you need to make the best choice! So take a moment (after you’re finished here) to click there, okay??

THE VP DEBATE: WHO WON??

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Sorry for bein’ a bit late tonight. Hadta rebuild my PC …

Now — where were we?? OHHH yeah; the debate!!

On the one hand, you had a “rookie” — on the other, a guy who’s seen the inside of Capitol Hill since 1972. Not a lotta folks were expecting much from Sarah Palin as she went toe-to-toe with Joe. For some reason, America still has a bit of sexist quality about it, and thought Biden would have a field-day against his Republican opponent.

But …

a few minor gaffes aside, I thought Mrs. Palin did an excellent job in holding her own!! But she did more than that; she added some homespun wit and comfortability! Forget about the looks for a minute; she made the debate (dare I say this?) downright enjoyable!!

Granted, it’s gonna take a lot more than that to win the election; after all, she does have an investigation hangin’ over her head back home in Alaska (the courts just denied a request by Republicans to stop their look into her alleged “abuse-of-power”). She also needs to bone up on her facts a little, and stop just okayin’ McCain’s policy. After all, she’s already at odds with John over his input about Michigan. She’s gotta tell how she feels about every issue … and make sure she knows the issues inside-and-out to give a qualified, educated answer.

Still, it was good to see Biden’s face when he realized “Hey … she’s smarter than I THOUGHT!” And he’s gotta stick with the issues today … we don’t wanna hear as much about him (heck … we can always Google® his name if we wanna learn more) as we do about gettin’ outta Iraq, how to handle the problems facing the elderly, those with no insurance, and taxes.

But they both did moderately well, concerning it was their first televised debate.

So, what did you think??  Lemme know …

Startin’ A Revolution

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Gettin’ back to the Observer for a minute …

They recently printed a piece called 5 Ways To Start A Revolution that I wish everybody would take the time to download and read.
There are a coupla points they make that can really shake things up, both in your personal life as well as in the Queen City’s, if we take the time to use ‘em!

Now, maybe it won’t seem as stirring as the photo on your right, but it can be just as important personally:
For example, get out there and CHANGE SOMETHING!!
How often do we look at what’s goin’ on around us, whether it be in Myers Park, uptown, Pineville, West Blvd. or Derita and figure “well, that’s for somebody else to handle!”
Well, guess what?  “Somebody else” is thinkin’ exactly the same thing!  And, before ya know it, you’ve got that great “Tammany Ring” cartoon in action (awww, c’mon … look it up!).  Of course, in that case, nothin’s gonna be done!
So get involved!  Whether it’s something that needs to be addressed in the city or in your private life, CHANGE SOMETHING!

The other is LIVE DANGEROUSLY.  Now, I woulda used a little better wording, like LIVE DARINGLY!!  Though they give some unusual examples, one says Get in the game!  Brother, this whole friggin’ life is a game we’ve gotta play in order to get ahead or get some movement in society.  And we can’t do it by sittin’ on the sidelines!  We’ve gotta get to town meetings, support groups, local festivals, contribute to our favorite charities, and get involved with what’s happening here!

And when all’s said and done, and thousands of Charlotteans can breathe a sigh of accomplishment, you’re gonna see a change in this city … and in ourselves individually … that’ll make us proud …

MOVIN’ ON UP

Okay, let’s say it is “to the east side”, as the song says. Maybe you’re planning on movin’ to SC, or some town in the midwest. You’ve got all your plans made, your boxes packed; now you’ve gotta deal with rentin’ a truck, insurance, have gas money, get return points and …
WHOA! That’s not gonna be necessary!
Y’see, there’s a company that’ll not only move ya, but will save you money in the process! In fact, their gasoline charges are built into their quotes, which you can request online (I’ll give ya the link in a second).
They’ll also give you not two days (as most movers will, if ya bend their arms!) but three to pack and load (or unload, when you reach your destination).
Behind the link, you’ll also find some great tips to help you in your move … even a moving blog to help keep you updated and informed.
So, before ya start worryin’ about who’s gonna move ya, it’ll be worth your while to check out the best moving services in the nation (hey … since 1923! Need I say more??).
Do it now … and be ready for a great and completely satisfying move!
