Charlotte Makes Its Own Music
Throughout the Great 48 (contiguous states) and Canada, there are loads of different musical styles, groups, singers and acts — and, as The Rock Relic, I’ve had the chance to hear quite a few of ‘em.
Natch, Nashville’s got its C&W, Memphis its R&B, New Orleans its Jazz, LA its Salsa and NYC its rock. But Charlotte? It’s got its own, inimitable style.
First, I’ve gotta give props to the fantastic sounds that have made this area. From Wilbert Harrison to George Hamilton V, Superchiefs to SpongeTones, it’s been teeming with rock and soul sounds for decades. But, if you notice, there is one big difference:
Ego. The Charlotte rockvoices don’t seem to have the “too-busy-to-deal-with-home” attitude of mainline acts. They understand the need for closeness to those who, as it were, “brought ‘em to the dance.”
Today (and speaking from RockRelicResearch) we’re apparently heading into the “second coming” of Merseybeat (incidentally: props to Charlotte from my RockReaders, who acknowledge that at least we didn’t go postal over John Lennon’s “more popular than Christ” remark. It did hit TYC in Rock Hill, but that’s as close as it got!). As this revitalized Brit sound has influenced groups from Modest Mouse, OK GO!, Fratellis and Northern Mississippi Allstars, it’s just a matter of time before our non-egoic, paid-our-dues musicians pick up on it again …
And Charlotte’s gonna rock bigtime again …
